NYC Uber drivers could soon start getting tips

And the nearer you are to the tippee, whether it's a barista or an Uber driver, the more like you are to tip. In September, the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1181 announced that 14,000 Lyft, Uber, and other e-hail drivers had signed union cards, but given the drivers' current classification as independent contractors, it's not clear how they'll get legal recognition.

Uber's refusal to launch an in-app tip option led the guild to launch a campaign previous year with vehicle stickers and social media posts to let passengers know that they can tip and that gratuity is not included in their fare. Some of those services are reserved over the phone or by company voucher.

"It's just not possible to make it on straight UberX rates", Conigliaro said.

"Professional drivers are a vital part of both our city's transportation network and economy, and driving for-hire has supported hundreds of thousands of New York City families for decades", TLC Commissioner Meera Joshi said in a statement.

IDG raised the concern with Uber in June.

"Uber led drivers and passengers alike to believe that fares would match what was lost in gratuities", he said. Justice R S Endlaw restrained two taxi driver unions from disrupting services of cabs run by aggregator companies Ola and Uber in the national capital region. Though tipping is permitted, many riders don't carry cash, or don't feel compelled to dig around in their pockets once the ride is done.

New York City taxis and Lyft already offer tipping via credit card, but Uber now does not. TLC rules already govern the suggested tipping levels for credit-card payments in yellow cabs.

The IDG based its tip-revenue projections on the fact that nearly all taxi passengers tip, and most tip 20%.

If New York City does force Uber to tip it could increase pressure on Uber from drivers in other cities around the world - many of which have concocted inventive ways to encourage tipping, often in vain as many riders do not have cash on hand.

"People do want to tip".

An Uber spokesperson said the company had not yet seen the TLC's proposal but looked forward to reviewing it. "Uber is always striving to offer the best earning opportunity for drivers, and we are constantly working to improve the driver experience", the spokesperson said in an email.

A new New York City regulation could force Uber and other on-demand vehicle services to offer tipping for drivers in their app, a change that could make driving more lucrative in the city.
