Shark kills 17-year-old surfer in southern Australia

A 17-year-old girl has died after being mauled by a shark while out surfing with her father off the south coast of Western Australia.

It was reported that the girl was pulled from the water unconscious and with obvious serious injuries.

Police said the victim, whose name was not released, was from Mandurah, which is near Perth, and she was on vacation with her family.

WA police confirmed on Monday night that the girl later died.

Wylie Bay Beach will be closed until further notice and the Department of Fisheries will spend Tuesday patrolling the beach. Her mother and two sisters saw the attack from the beach.

Kelp Beds is the same surf break in which Sean Pollard lost his left arm and right hand when he was viciously attacked by two sharks in 2014.

Last year, two people were killed by sharks in Western Australia, The Australian newspaper said.

According to data from the Shark Research Institute, this is the eighth shark attack in Australian waters this year, and the first fatality.

One month earlier, Ben Gerring, 29, died after having his leg severed by a great white shark at Falcon Beach.
