Trump Considering Sanctions Against Russia, Iran for Supporting Syria

Russian Federation had warned on Friday that the United States cruise missile strikes on the Syrian air base could have "extremely serious" consequences, following USA president Donald Trump's first major foray into a foreign conflict.

The official also said that the U.S. bombing was meant to send a message to the Syrian regime that any use of chemical weapon will not be tolerated by the US.

Mr Tillerson is expected in Moscow for talks with Russian officials next week.

Once that threat "has been reduced or eliminated, I think we can turn our attention directly to stabilizing the situation in Syria", he told CBS' "Face the Nation". Reluctant to put significant troops on the ground in Syria, the US for years has struggled to prevent Assad from strengthening his hold on power.

Amid rising tensions between Moscow and Washington, Johnson said Saturday the situation in war-torn Syria had "fundamentally" changed following a chemical weapons attack on civilians and the USA airstrikes targeting a military airfield. He said Iran condemned the missile launch "regardless of the perpetrators and the victims" of Tuesday's chemical weapons attack in Syria.

"I think the real failure here has been Russia's failure to live up to its commitments under the chemical weapons agreements that were entered into in 2013", Tillerson said on ABC's This Week.

However, the Russian Defense Ministry said "no evidence whatsoever" has been presented by Washington to prove that the Shayrat airfield had any chemical weapons.

Iran and Russian Federation have been the key backers of Assad and refer to all Syrian opposition groups as "terrorists".

The US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley told an emergency session of the UN Security Council that the US had acted to ensure Syrian President Bashar al-Assad would never use chemical weapons again.

But Tillerson, who is expected to visit Moscow on Wednesday for talks with Russian officials, said on ABC's This Week program there was "no change" to the US military posture towards Syria.

Russian Federation meanwhile said a decision by the British foreign secretary to cancel a visit to Moscow later this month showed a lack of understanding of events in Syria.

Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the United Nations, said the departure of Syrian President Bashar Assad is a USA priority, just as it was under the Obama administration, and that peace in Syria was probably impossible while he remained in power.
