Two Detroit Cops Shot and Wounded; Resident May Have Been Protecting Home

Two Detroit Police officers were injured in a late night shooting on the city's west side.

Police had a 19-year-old man who is believed to have fired the shot in custody Monday. Detroit police say two officers have been wounded in the shooting while responding to a reported burglary.

Craig said the officers were responding to a 911 call about a burglary at about 11:45 p.m. Sunday.

Both officers were rushed to the hospital, where the officer who was shot is in critical condition. One officer was hit in the face and other was hit in the arm with shrapnel from the same bullet. The second officer has been with Detroit Police Department for at least 18 months.

According to the chief, the families of the officers also said they want to communicate their thoughts for the young man and the mother that was there.

According to WXYZ, a 19-year-old man fired a shotgun at the officers as they checked out the man's home. The two-year veteran was in surgery on Monday and Craig says they're hopeful he will pull through.

"Right after the shot, he called 911", Redd said.

"We are optimistic", he said.

Redd says his son didn't know police had been called and was still shaken up from an attempted break-in last week. Jim Martinez, a spokesman for Wayne County, said the autopsy conducted Sunday by the county medical examiner's office showed that Mr. Lowe died of multiple gunshot wounds. FOX 2 has learned that thw two officers who were injured are asking for leniency.
