How Twitter reacted to Vijay Mallya's arrest

Scotland Yard had earlier confirmed his arrest.

Mallya is likely to be extradited to India as a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team is set to visit the United Kingdom soon.

Mallya, who has often accused Indian media of hyping his case, said his extradition hearing "started as expected". It is Scotland Yard Police that was able to track Vijay Mallya and finally arrested him today morning.

He allegedly willfully defaulted loans he had obtained from 17 banks, mostly PSBs. He has been arrested on April 18 in London, produced in a metropolitan court and even granted a bail.

Vijay Mallya, a multimillionaire Indian businessman, was arrested in London on fraud accusations Tuesday.

The statement further said: "He was arrested after attending a central London police station, and will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court later today, 18 April".

At the time, Mallya denied that he left the country in order to avoid creditors, saying he is not an "absconder".

Mallya fled to Britain in March 2016 after the banks approached the Court against his failure to repay the loan amount of over Rs.9,000 crores received on behalf of his Kingfisher Airlines.

In September 2016, the Indian government revoked Mallya's passport on grounds of misconduct and refusal to answer charges of "wilful default".

"Vijay Mallya will be brought back to India, due process of law will be followed", he said.

The wanted person has a right to appeal to the higher courts against any decision all the way up to the Supreme Court.

The collapse of the airline, which was grounded in 2012, triggered the failing of several of his other businesses, which range from alcohol to the Formula 1 team Force India and an Indian Premier League cricket club. On February 21, the U.K. Home Office conveyed to Indian officials that the request was certified by the Secretary of State and sent to the Westminster Magistrates' Court for a District Judge to consider issuing an arrest warrant.
