Pentagon didn't need Donald Trump's permission to drop massive bomb in Afghanistan

Pentagon didn't need Donald Trump's permission to drop massive bomb in Afghanistan

An Islamic State activist from Kerala is believed to have been among the 36 ISIS militants killed when the USA dropped a massive GBU-43 bomb, also known as the "mother of all bombs", on the terror group's position in a cave network in eastern Afghanistan.

The statement by the spokesperson for the governor of Nangarhar came after an Afghan Ministry of Defense official said on Friday that ongoing clearance and assessment of the bomb site in the Achin district of Nangarhar indicated that the number of dead could rise.

While US officials have upped their death count from the Afghan MOAB drop to 94, Indian authorities are claiming that at least 500 Pakistani nationals (who had been protecting the ISIS operatives in this area) were killed in the US bombing in Nangarhar province.

But that changed on Thursday, when the GBU-43 aka the "mother of all bombs" was dropped on a complex of underground tunnels and caves used by ISIS fighters in eastern Afghanistan, close to the country's border with Pakistan.

President Trump had praised the USA military after it dropped the GBU-43 bomb in Afghanistan, calling the mission "a great success".

Military officials said then they hoped such a huge blast would rattle Iraqi troops and pressure them into surrendering or not even fighting.

"It was the right time to use it tactically against the right target on the battlefield".

"This was the right weapon against the right target", Gen. John W. Nicholson, Jr., commander for USA forces in Afghanistan, said Friday at a news conference.

The United States is also investigating two strikes in Iraq and Syria, which Iraqi officials and activists in Syria say killed dozens of civilians.

The suicide bombers and the VBIED were eliminated in an airstrike conducted by the USA forces based in Afghanistan, the police commandment said.

"I thought there was a bombing just outside my home", he said. An American special forces soldier was killed last Saturday in Nangarhar.

And later on Saturday, during an address delivered at an event in Kabul, the capital city of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai, the former president of the country, criticized the Afghan government for allowing the USA military to launch the bomb attack.

US President Donald Trump called it a "successful mission" and said that the US military had full authoirisation to attack.

"We have the greatest military in the world, and they've done a great job as usual so we have given them total authorization".

Use of the weapon had nothing to do with sending a message to any other country, including North Korea, the official added.

Rahim Khan, another Kabul resident, also took a skeptical view of America's role in the fighting.

The security situation remains precarious in Afghanistan, with a number of militant groups trying to claim territory more than 15 years after the USA invasion which toppled the Taliban government.
