What will happen now there's going to be a General Election?

The sterling move can be attributed to two things - firstly the fact that the market expects the Conservatives to win by a comfortable margin thus providing continuity of government and also greater freedom for Theresa May in her Brexit negotiations (since she will no longer be hostage to the most vehement anti-EU Tory MPs). If we do not hold a General Election now their political gameplaying will continue and the negotiations with the European Union will reach their most hard stage in the run-up to the next scheduled election. Former U.K. Prime Minister Gordon Brown made what many political observers view as a fatal strategic blunder in not calling a snap election in 2007 after predecessor Tony Blair stepped down.

But a Downing Street source said that the Prime Minister would flatly reject any proposal for a TV showdown, insisting: 'Our answer is no'. However, support would always be easy to win, because opposition parties did not like to oppose elections, he said.

The Conservatives only have a small majority in the House of Commons, with 330 of the 650 seats.

"They underestimate our determination to get the job done and I am not prepared to let them endanger the security of millions of working people across the country", she said.

One of the reasons for this, May said in her announcement, was that the opposition parties were jeopardising her government's Brexit preparations.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn welcomed the announcement.

The Lib Dems and SNP have also spoken in favour, saying they want to campaign against Brexit.

As Brexit will be one of the most momentous and hard peacetime decisions ever made in the United Kingdom, she wants to have a mandate from the country (and may want to avoid having to go through an election in the wake of us actually quitting the EU).

Explaining the decision, May said: "The country is coming together but Westminster is not".

May will hope the election will boost her slim majority in parliament and give her a new mandate to put her stamp on domestic reforms in education and health and strengthen her hand in talks with the European Union, which will start in earnest in June.

The decision is a clear dismissal of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who within hours of the election being called threw down the gauntlet to the Prime Minister with a direct challenge to a TV contest on Twitter.

Why has the election been called?

Tim Farron, leader of the Liberal Democrats - which was battered in the 2015 election and now holds just nine seats in the House of Commons - said the election was Britain's chance to change direction.

The remaining 27 European Union countries are set to rubber-stamp Tusk's guidelines at a summit on April 29, paving the way for chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier to begin formal negotiations with Britain at the end of May.

The Scottish National Party now holds 54 of Scotland's 59 seats in the British Parliament, making it the third-largest party there. If you want to keep Britain in the single market.

The strongly pro-EU Liberal Democrats have seen thousands of new members join since the referendum and are likely to make gains. Once Brexit negotiations begin properly, and the economic reality of Britain's exit deal becomes apparent, it's likely the government would begin to lose popularity.
