Apple may start testing self-driving cars in California indicates permit

According to Loup Ventures founder Gene Munster, the permit to test cars in California was not a surprise.

At this time, there are no details yet regarding the specs or features of Apple's self-driving auto. It has been referred to as "part of an initiative called Project Titan". The company is only testing components of a self-driving auto. As per media reports, the company hired automobile and self-driving technology experts and has setup a team under Project Titan to develop its autonomous vehicle.

It was back in September that Apple reportedly "repositioned its focus", shifting from production of a fully autonomous auto to just the self-driving technology itself. As Business Insider describes, Apple, Inc. However, several days ago, the technology giant received a permit that will allow it to test self-driving cars in California. The list includes VW, Mercedes, Google, Bosch, Tesla, BMW, GM, Ford, Baidu, Honda, Subaru and Faraday.

Apple executives have been coy about their interest in cars.

The secretive company that it is, little is known about the autonomous skills of Apple's software, but in a letter a year ago to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Apple said it was "investing heavily in the study of machine learning and automation, and is excited about the potential of automated systems in many areas, including transportation". Chief Executive Tim Cook has suggested that Apple wants to move beyond integration of Apple smartphones into vehicle infotainment systems. Under the state's testing regulations, all autonomous vehicles on the road will require a person behind the wheel to monitor testing. Many companies have signed up for permit but haven't driven any miles, as per official data. "We'll know more about Apple's secretive efforts after the company files its first report".
