Australia scraps visa for skilled foreign workers

Australia scraps visa for skilled foreign workers

The current 4-year work visa program, 457 visa program [materials], which allows workers from overseas to live in Australia with their immediate family, will be abolished [BBC report] and will be replaced by two temporary visas that carry additional obstacles. The particular visa programme is highly popular among Indian workers.

On Tuesday, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced that his government was abolishing a temporary worker visa programme that would affect around 95,000 foreign workers-the majority of them Indians.

The Department of Immigration and Border Protection confirmed that existing visa holders would not be affected by the change, and would be accommodated for under the reform.

"We'll no longer let 457 visas be passports to jobs that could and should go to Australians".

At a press conference on Tuesday, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said "We're bringing the 457 visa class to an end".

He says there are still jobs Australians don't want to do, "whether it is packing offal in an abattoir or boning out skulls".

"Where employers breach their obligations then they won't be able to get further people in under visas", Mr Turnbull told ABC radio on Wednesday.

The government claimed that the 457 visa was allegedly being used by companies to bring low-priced workers from overseas.

A list of 52 jobs have been published that the Government intends to review and likely remove from the skills eligable for the new visas - spray painters and panel beaters are not on this list.

Following are the 216 jobs that are being for foreign workers.

The new two-year visa won't be a pathway to permanent residency, but anyone now in Australia on a 457 visa won't be affected by the new arrangements.

The new temporary visa requires applicants to have work experience, a high standard of English skills and a criminal check.

Immigration minister, Peter Dutton, said the list of eligible jobs would be "even tighter" for the four-year visa.

In the 12 months to June 2016, just 3,030 Irish people, including workers, their partners and children, were granted these skilled visas, down 26 per cent from 4,119 the previous year, and 71 per cent since the numbers peaked in 2013.
