EPA chief tours toxic East Chicago site

EPA chief tours toxic East Chicago site

Thirteen states, API and several other industry groups oppose the rules, while at least nine states and a coalition of environmental groups is in support. It was listed on the "National Priorities List" of the worst contaminated hazardous waste sites in the country in 2009. Also, Trump has proposed eliminating EPA's budget by almost one-third. The program is meant to support poor, often minority communities with severe environmental challenges.

Some environmental advocates are calling Wednesday's visit a first major test of Pruitt's leadership. In attendance were residents, NAACP national President Cornell Williams Brooks and community members.

Really, Scott Pruitt? Western Pennsylvanians know enough to recognize when you are blowing (coal) dust when you declare that "the war on coal is done" ("EPA's Pruitt Says He'll Be a Friend to Coal", April 14).

"There are proven, low-priced ways to capture methane instead of letting it pollute our air, and the last administration put in place standards to make sure we do just that", Michelle Robinson, a director at the Union of Concerned Scientists, said in a press statement after the news.

She said the regulation's limits on toxic air emissions from coal- and oil-fired power plants had saved thousands of lives and reduced childhood asthma attacks, among other public health benefits, and that its benefits far outweigh its costs.

"EPA is continuing to follow through with President Trump's Energy Independence Executive Order", Pruitt said in a statement on Wednesday.

"We can't drink the waters".

Emails obtained in a Freedom of Information Act request showed EPA had a role in the city's decision to change the chemical it was using to control corrosion of lead pipes. "Administrator Pruitt was working for environmental justice by meeting with the real residents affected by lead contamination and by committing to get results".

The hypocrisy of it all hasn't been lost on community activists who fought for years to try to protect East Chicago children living atop a toxic Superfund site from lead poisoning. This year, IN will distribute filters to all residents IN Zones 2 and 3.

Administrator Scott Pruitt will join IN leaders including Gov. Eric Holcomb IN East Chicago.

"Please know that it's the EPA's objective, my objective as the administrator of the EPA, to come in and make sure that people's health is protected here in East Chicago and that they can have confidence that their land, their health is going to be secure for the long term", Pruitt said.

Pruitt went on: "Since I was sworn in as administrator, funding has been secured for drinking water infrastructure upgrades in East Chicago, filters and bottled water have been provided to residents and cleanup of contaminated soil has resumed".
