Hillary Clinton to President Barack Obama: 'I'm sorry'

Hillary Clinton to President Barack Obama: 'I'm sorry'

Steven Ginsberg is the senior politics editor for The Washington Post.

In "Shattered: Inside Hillary Clinton's Doomed Campaign", by The Hill's Amie Parnes and Sidewire's Jonathan Allen, the authors discuss Sanders' response to a script for the campaign ad he received in September.

Donald Trump giving his acceptance speech after defeating Hillary Clinton.

"As all of you famously learned when I served as president, my wife, now the secretary of state, was known to commune with Eleanor on a regular basis", Clinton said to applause.

Bill Clinton's chief of staff, Tina Flournoy, "mentioned to him and a small group of his aides that she was going to see the Rolling Stones in Europe". There would be no victory to celebrate.

The call worked and Mrs Clinton's close aide Huma Abedin called Mr Trump's campaign manager Kellyanne Conway.

"POTUS (President of the United States) doesn't think it's wise to drag this out", Simas was quoted as saying.

But Clinton was dragging it out.

After this conversation, Mr Obama called her again. Still, Clinton did not give in, not even when Obama himself later called and said, "You need to concede".

According to Parnes and Allen, Favreau was set to write Clinton's speech announcing her presidential bid, but dropped out because he felt the campaign did not have a "common objective".

"Now, though, with the President placing a consolation call, the reality and dimensions of her defeat hit her all at once". Instead we get a slow-building case against the concept and execution of the Clinton campaign, with plenty of fault falling squarely on the candidate herself.

The dire scene in the Peninsula unearths a bit of history that was mostly left unreported in the madness that followed that night, as the country and the world focused nearly entirely on the emerging reality of Trump's victory.

This hysteria over Russia-gate has consumed the first several months of the Trump presidency - badgering the Trump administration into a more belligerent posture toward nuclear-armed Russian Federation - but leaving little incentive for the Democrats to assess what they need to do to appeal to working-class voters who chose Trump's empty-headed populism over Clinton's cold-hearted calculations.

Most interesting to readers will be the very first account of what it was like being in the room as it dawned on the Clintons that they had lost.

Clinton went to bed before her aides, who slipped a finished draft of the speech under her hotel-room door at 5 a.m.

"This is painful and it will be for a long time, but I want you to remember this", she continued.

But Allen and Parnes offer a first bridge beyond the journalism of the campaign year to the scholarship of the historians and other scholars who will process all this material for generations to come. Many of these details have been the focus of book reviews from organizations like Axios and NPR.

Comey had publicly announced a reopening of the Clinton email investigation in late October. Those of us who were watching that evening know she did not make the call to congratulate Trump until nearly 3:00 A.M. ET. By contrast, Clinton's primary fight against Sen. With Clinton, we never quite got there.
