McLaren's F1 testing programme disrupted by Honda engine issues in Bahrain

McLaren's F1 testing programme disrupted by Honda engine issues in Bahrain

Wolff admitted that on the first occasion the team had waited too long, effectively costing Hamilton some momentum.

Hamilton, who will be replaced by his Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas for the concluding day of the in-season test on Wednesday, finished more than half a second clear of Ferrari test driver Antonio Giovinazzi, with Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo third. A water leak was diagnosed as the problem with Turvey then missing the majority of the day as McLaren replaced the faulty Honda power unit. "But I'm definitely a team player so I wouldn't say no to that [team order]". Such is the advantage of being the world championship leader.

Asked about the message, Bottas replied: "I wasn't really thinking about it, but when I initially heard the call, for me it made sense. I know that gap can not come from driving, so I'm sure we'll find some reason for why I struggled more than Lewis". I try to handle it the best way I can, but it eats you up a little bit inside and you have just got to end up trying to cope and move forward. "I understand the team completely on that".

It was Vettel's second win in the three races held so far in 2017, and comes just seven days after Mercedes rival Lewis Hamilton defeated the Ferrari driver in China.

"Stint two and three, there is no explanation why the rear end wasn't working".

Bottas, in three races to date as Rosberg's replacement, does not seem to be at the level required to chase the title and at one point in Bahrain was holding up the quicker Hamilton.

Bottas, who joined Mercedes in January as replacement for now-retired world champion Nico Rosberg, is 23 adrift of his teammate.

While Vettel took victory ahead of Hamilton, Bottas was left to rue a missed opportunity having been unable to convert his maiden pole position into his first F1 win.

Bahrain was Bottas's first career pole position, whereas Hamilton has 63 and could sail past Schumacher's record of 68 later in the year.

"We don't like that, at all", said motorsport boss Wolff. "It was quite odd to lose so much pace, but it's not so easy to explain why, yet". They explained all the reasons behind it, but it didn't work out, we didn't gain more points for the team, but it could have been an opportunity for Lewis.
