NCAA returns events to NC after state rolls back LGBT law

NCAA returns events to NC after state rolls back LGBT law

The NCAA similarly announced Tuesday that Greensboro and Raleigh would host men's basketball tournament games, and that championships in dozens of other sports would be played in North Carolina now that HB2 has been replaced with a compromise measure.

The organization issued a deadline to the state, saying North Carolina must repeal the law by the end of March or run the risk of losing out on NCAA championship events through 2022.

In August 2016, the NCAA said it would relocate championships that were scheduled to be held in North Carolina during the 2016-2017 academic year, citing the "cumulative impact HB2 had on local communities' ability to ensure a safe, healthy, discrimination-free atmosphere for all those watching and participating" in its events. Most notably, a men's basketball sub-regional was moved from Greensboro, N.C., to Greenville, S.C. A total of 613 sites were awarded for this cycle. The NCAA has also made it official that North Carolina can host their events again now, too. In 2012, they pulled six planned championship events in New Jersey, specifically citing the "integrity of the game" and "concerns for student-athlete well-being" as its reason for doing so.

Rights groups criticized the NCAA for returning to North Carolina while its cities were still banned from passing anti-discrimination laws. "We're looking forward to working with the groups that earned preliminary-round basketball sites, as well as the local organizing committees already slated to host NCAA Men's and Women's Final Fours".

The ACC women's basketball tournament will be held at the Greensboro Coliseum for the 18th time in 19 years, February 28-March 4, 2018.

Dayton will continue to host the NCAA First Four through at least 2022, as it has served as the site for the start of the Division I men's basketball tournament since 2001.

The proposal for fencing was to hold the event at the Prime Osborn Center.

The state had hosted NCAA Tournament games in 11 of 13 years before the NCAA removed Greensboro as a site for this year's March Madness.

"We are actively determining site selections, and this new law has minimally achieved a situation where we believe NCAA championships may be conducted in a nondiscriminatory environment", the NCAA Board of Governors stated in a release earlier this month. The respectiveNCAA sports committees and the divisional championships cabinets/committees reviewed the bid proposals and selected the sites.
