Nintendo developing SNES mini

Nintendo developing SNES mini

According to a new report out of Eurogamer, Nintendo's now cooking up a new SNES console that'll be sold much like the NES Classic Edition, but possibly in higher quantities.

Eurogamer's sources, however, said Nintendo also discontinued the NES Classic Edition to make room in manufacturing for the SNES version.

There's no word on which games will be included, but you can bet it would feature classic third-party entries such as Super Metroid, Super Mario World, and A Link To The Past.

It could be "your childhood in a brilliant little box", as CNET referred to the NES Classic, for a slightly younger generation than fans of the original Nintendo.

NES Classic Edition came with 30 games, through the unofficial process for dropping in extra ROMs is surprisingly straightforward.

It is known, since the first announcement of the NES Classic Edition, that the console was not a permanent product. Last season's console was among the chart toppers during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, so it's nearly certain that the upcoming SNES Mini is going to do the same this year.

The NES Classic Mini cost £50 at retail - an incredibly cheap price considering how many games were bundled. However, Nintendo chose not to make enough of them initially, then chose not to react to that demand, and then took the head-scratching decision to discontinue the product last week. It's time to put that in the past now and look forward to the SNES Mini. The NES console had pre-installed games, but the RetroFreak lets you play all of your old '80s and '90s gaming cartridges on the same platform. If it comes out true, the SNES Mini will definitely follow the footsteps of the Nintendo NES Classic Mini. We understand that it has been hard for many consumers to find a system, and for that we apologize. The video game maker may be setting their sights on a sequel later this year.

Although not yet announced, Eurogamer reports that the SNES Classic Mini is set to launch this holiday season.
