Russell's HR caps 4-run 9th as Cubs top Brewers 7-4

Russell's HR caps 4-run 9th as Cubs top Brewers 7-4

Chicago Cubs outfielders Kyle Schwarber and Jason Heyward are getting the day off Wednesday against the Milwaukee Brewers.

"It's not like we're playing poorly", manager Joe Maddon said. "And he's on his way to that". Zach Davies (0-2, 8.79 ERA) is slated to face off against Carlos Martinez (0-2, 3.57 ERA), with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 PM CST.

"The middle of our lineup is carrying our offense", Counsell said.

Jon Jay is in left field, Albert Almora in center and Matt Szczur is starting in right for Wednesday afternoon's series finale against the Brewers.

Two of Hendricks' walks were to Thames, who walked three times.

The Cubs' on-deck circle used for games 1, 2, 6 and 7 topped $20,000. He struck out two, walked one and gave up the three home runs. His reaction is priceless, and it's an awesome father-son moment that you rarely get to see these days.

All the home runs were to left field and into a stiff 8 miles per hour wind. Both are really important to us this season.

Cubs: RHP Kyle Hendricks (1-1, 5.73 ERA) picked up the win against the Brewers on April 8.

The lead grew to 5-0 in the third inning when Shaw and Santana each drove in a run. Anderson pitched a ideal second inning but gave up two more runs in the third.

It took the Brewers three batters to break through against Lackey in the first inning.

Thames doubled into the right field corner with one out and Braun followed with a two-run home run - his fifth of the year. Schwarber had reached base with a lead-off bunt and moved to second on a passed ball. Jeromy Burnitz became the first and last Brewers player to homer in five straight games in August, 1997.

NOTES: Brewers 1B Eric Thames has hit safely in all 11 of his starts.

The Cubs rallied for a 9-7 win over their division rivals on Tuesday, snapping a four-game losing streak and evening the series after the Brewers posted a 6-3 victory in the opener. All three are now with the Kansas City Royals and had an off day.

CUBS KEY TRENDS: The Cubs just got swept by the Pirates at home but they're still 36-16 in their last 52 games at Wrigley Field. Encarnacion added an RBI groundout for Cleveland after entering the game with one homer and two RBIs this season.
