The Brie Larson starring Captain Marvel has found its directors

Captain Marvel will be Marvel's first female-fronted superhero movie, and it hits theaters in 2019.

Boden and Fleck have also directed and written It's Kind of a Funny Story (starring Emma Roberts and Zach Galifianakis), Sugar, and worked together on the critically-acclaimed Half Nelson, starring Ryan Gosling. Those names included Sam Taylor-Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) and Jennifer Kent (The Babadook).

The decision to hire the duo goes in hand with Marvel's history of making left field choices when it comes to choosing its directors. In other words, Captain Marvel, a big-budget flick, represents a serious step up for the both of them. Back in August 2016, it was reported that Lesli Linka Glatter (Homeland), Niki Caro (Whale Rider), and Lorene Scafaria (Seeking a Friend for the End of the World) were all on the studio's shortlist.

According to Variety, Marvel came to the decision after it was satisfied that the script was "in the right shape before tapping who would direct it."The studios met with a number of contenders".

She is an air force pilot named Carol Danvers, who gets special powers after an alien encounter. The infusion gives Danvers superpowers including super strength, flight, and energy projection. More recently, Danvers took on the identity of Captain Marvel after being "promoted" to the moniker of the former Kree superhero.

Of all of the upcoming MCU films, Captain Marvel is the one we know the least about.

Meg LeFauvre (Inside Out) and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel's Gamora comic book) are working on the script for Captain Marvel.

Set to release in March 2019, Captain Marvel was the only Phase 3 Marvel film without a director in place, though it seems that's no longer the case.
