UK prime minister defends decision to seek snap election

UK prime minister defends decision to seek snap election

The German government says that it doesn't expect a British election in June to hold up talks on Britain's exit from the European Union.

Britain's next election had been scheduled for May 2020, but a two-thirds majority vote in parliament could overrule that in Wednesday's vote, which British media reported could come at around 1300 GMT after an hour and a half of debate.

Theresa May made a surprise announcement on Tuesday that she would go to Parliament and table a motion to hold a vote on June 8.

Theresa May has promised to deliver "a strong economy, strong defence and strong, stable leadership" if Conservatives win the snap election.

An early ballot, which May wants to hold June 8, will give the prime minister - or her replacement - more time to implement Brexit before another election.

"I will be asking for the British people for a mandate to complete Brexit and make a success of it".

"That would be in nobody's interest", May said.

If the vote is carried, Parliament will be dissolved on 3 May, 25 days before the election date.

Having said that, Labour and other opposition groups - including the Liberal Democrats - have welcomed the snap election call. Its lawmakers abstained during Wednesday's vote.

In the Commons during a debate ahead of the vote on triggering the election process, SNP MP John Nicolson asked Mr Farron: "Will you rule out a coalition with the Conservatives, yes or no?" Opinion polls released last weekend showed the Conservatives with a double-digit lead over the opposition Labour Party, which has been weakened by a split between moderates and left-wing leader Corbyn.

May's Conservatives now hold 330 House of Commons seats and Labour 229.

Tim Bale, professor of politics at Queen Mary University of London, said that even for a cautious politician like May, the temptation of an early election was irresistible.

Ms May hit back that Labour offered only "bankruptcy and chaos", but denied she was complacent, saying: "We will be out there fighting for every vote".

Nick Clegg's Lib-Dems devastatingly lost 49 of their 57 seats at the 2015 election because they had spent the previous five years propping up David Cameron's Conservatives and reneging on their promise about tuition fees for students. It is vital that negotiators secure some early wins and all parties should commit to working to ensure businesses can continue to trade easily with our European Union neighbours, while seeking new opportunities around the world.

She said that "Brexit isn't just about the letter that says we want to leave".

Gordon Brown, another Prime Minister who got the job without a General Election, had a chance to go to the country a few months into his premiership, bottled it and never had such a good opportunity again.

There have been calls for TV broadcasters to "empty chair" Mrs May in election-time leaders' debates if she refuses to take part.

The Prime Minister said she believed campaigning should be getting "out and about" meeting voters.

The Prime Minister said Labour's economic policies would mean it is "ordinary working people who pay the price".
