Venezuelans gear up for opposition march

Venezuelans gear up for opposition march

Dozens even had to slide down a concrete embankment and into the Guaire River to escape the noxious fumes.

The Party for Socialism and Liberation extends its fullest solidarity with the government of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, the PSUV and all the people fighting to defend the Bolivarian Revolution.

"This was supposed to be a happy moment but instead I came home to see my brother die", said Sojo, who grew up in the Romero home and returned Tuesday from Ecuador, where he had been living the past year.

This new wave of protests began early this month after the pro-government Supreme Court tried to dissolve the opposition-controlled congress - only backtracking amid global pressure.

"Venezuela remains mired in a deep economic crisis", International Monetary Fund authors wrote in its World Economic Outlook. One protester was reportedly wounded in the head by gunfire as government supporters fired on the crowd at one opposition rallying point, according to photos posted on social media.

"Why did they decide to launch this offensive all of a sudden?"

There have been five other deaths nationwide tied to protests that began in early April after the Supreme Court gutted the opposition-controlled congress of its last remaining powers.

Senior opposition leader Henrique Capriles dismissed Maduro's announcement.

Signed by the governments of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, México, Paraguay, Perú, and Uruguay, Monday's statement additionally urges Caracas to release a timetable for regional elections that were delayed a year ago "to solve the serious crisis affecting Venezuela and which worries the region".

Maduro holds that this is not his fault, however, but the fault of foreign backed opposition leaders. Critics say any elections since have been delayed because Maduro is afraid of the outcome.

Marchers in the opposition demonstration in Caracas included Liliana Machuca, who earns about $20 a month holding two jobs teaching literature. "That's why they have received a forceful response from the Venezuela government, which rejects and protests these positions", she continued. Instead of joining the marches, she said, he was on the way to play soccer.

Venezuela has been rocked by unrest since March 30, when Maduro's camp moved to consolidate its control with a Supreme Court decision quashing the power of the opposition-majority legislature.

They included state workers like Leidy Marquez, who was bused in from Tachira state on the other side of teh country.

Maduro says recent protests have been little more than opposition efforts to foment violence and topple his government.

Unidad Venezuela, a coalition of opposition parties, also organized marches in each of the country's 24 states. The opposition blames the deaths on security forces and alleged paramilitary groups.

"We also again remind the public forces - members of the Police, the Army and the National Guard - as well as members of the judiciary, of their legal and constitutional responsibilities to protect, not prevent, peaceful demonstrations", reads the statement.

The scene grew violent after Maduro put troops on the streets and gave guns to pro-government civil militias, ignoring calls from 11 neighboring countries and the United States to respect citizens' right to protest.

Moreno was shot in the head in the San Bernardino neighborhood of Caracas, and reports indicate he was not participating in the protest.
