Buttler, Rana blitzkriegs eclipse Amla ton

Buttler, Rana blitzkriegs eclipse Amla ton

Chasing a mammoth 199, the opening duo of Parthiv Patel (37) and Buttler dealt mostly in boundaries to raise Mumbai's highest first wicket stand of all IPL seasons of 81 runs, as the Punjab bowlers had little to counter the left-right pair.

Maxwell and Amla's brilliant batting would not be enough for the Kings XI though as they set Mumbai 199 to win.

England worldwide Jos Buttler produced an innings of brute power to outshine Hashim Amla and inspire Mumbai Indians to a stunning eight-wicket win over Shaun Marsh and Glenn Maxwell's Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League.

McClenaghan was on the receiving end of a 28-run pasting in one over as Maxwell, dubbed the "Big Show" for unorthodox big-hitting, belted the Kiwi for three sixes and two fours in just five balls as Kings XI Punjab hosted the Mumabi Indians in Indore.

Marsh who opened Punjab's innings along with Amla scored 26 runs off 21 balls. Those 50 runs from two overs gave Kings XI a significant boost. They'll be up against the Mumbai Indians - habitually slow starters in IPL but have been looking to buck the trend this year. In the fourteenth over Jose Buttler, who was heading towards his century, was sent back to the pavilion by Mohit Sharma for 77 off 37 balls. However, Mumbai bowling coach Shane Bond is not at all intimidated by the fact that KXIP are formidable at the Holkar Stadium. In the first ball of the 15th over, Rana raced to his third fifty of the competition in only 29 deliveries by edging out a six off Ishant Sharma.

Buttler and Parthiv Patel made a cracking start for Mumbai. For the Kings XI Punjab, it was their fourth loss on the trot.

Malinga came in to bowl the last over, but got hit for two sixes, allowing Amla to get to a fine hundred.

Glenn Maxwell made merry with the well-set Amla alongside him.

An unbeaten 104 from Hashim Amla had helped guide Punjab to a score of 198-4 in their 20 overs after they had been put in by Mumbai.

Marsh struck three boundaries in the next two overs while Amla smashed another six to take the total to 39 for naught in five overs. The Indian was scoring his runs with short-arm jabs, pulls and classy cut shots square of the wicket.

The IPL continues with Kolkata Knight Riders versus Gujarat Lions on Friday, live on Sky Sports 2 from 3pm.
