VA Announces New Program Allowing Veterans to Get Treatment at CVS

VA Announces New Program Allowing Veterans to Get Treatment at CVS

The Access and Quality Tool is an easy-to-use, easy-to-understand way of accessing data, giving veterans more information about services and holding VA medical centers accountable, according to a Department of Veterans Affairs press release.

The current Veterans Choice Program (VCP) restricts veterans from seeking outside care unless they have to wait more than 30 days for an appointment.

The pilot is technically part of the VA's existing Choice program, which sends veterans to private health care providers at the government's expense. If the nearest VA clinic is over 40 miles away, then a veteran is allowed to seek outside care as well.

Under this program, nurses at the Phoenix VA facility's help line will be allowed to refer veterans to CVS' MinuteClinics when it is deemed "medically appropriate".

"Veterans must have access to information that is clear and understandable to make informed decisions about their health care", said VA Sec. VA Secretary David Shulkin has indicated he would like to scrap the current VCP restrictions. "Congress has once again demonstrated that the country stands firmly united when it comes to supporting our nation's Veterans", Shulkin said at the time.

From his seat on the House Veterans Affairs Committee, U.S. Rep. John Rutherford, R-Fla., insisted he was "proud of the work we've done" and called the new online portal a step in the right direction. "Thanks to the leadership of CVS Health and the VA, Phoenix's almost 120,000 Veterans will now be served at 24 different area MinuteClinic locations for minor health care services".

The VA says veterans can use the site to compare that data with other facilities in their area.

Democrats have criticized Republican politicians for wanting to privatize veterans' care. She said a veteran's medical record will be shared electronically, with MinuteClinic providing visit summaries to the veteran's VA primary care physician so that the VA can provide follow-up services if needed. Baklava is his achilles heel.
