Man United set to sign former player Michael Keane

Man United set to sign former player Michael Keane

Louis van Gaal allowed the former Reserve Player of the Year to move to Turf Moor for just £2million.

Manchester United are closing in on a £25 million deal for Burnley centre-back Michael Keane, according to reports.

Manchester United have emerged as the front-runners in the race to sign the 24-year-old who left Old Trafford for £2m.

Keane is reportedly keen to re-join the club he has supported since he was a boy.

Keane, who has continued to live in Manchester and is a boyhood United fan, can expect to quadruple his £25 000-a-week (about R425 500) wages if he returns to a club that he first joined at the age of 11.

Keane has made 35 appearances for Burnley this season, keeping 12 clean sheets and scoring two goals for the side.

He is set to become Jose Mourinho's first signing of the summer transfer window.

"It is the balance of what you are doing at a club like this", he said.

Even so, the move is likely to raise further questions over United's transfer policy after the club paid a world record £89m last summer to re-sign Paul Pogba - four years after selling him to Juventus for £800,000.

The player is keen on a return but wants assurances that he will play in excess of 30 games a season.

Despite Smalling's assertion that he has a "very good relationship" with Mourinho, it is understood that the United manager has been unhappy... According to The Times, United and Burnley are "very close" to agreeing a deal that is believed to be about £25m (32.4m).
