Feyenoord win first Eredivisie title in 18 years after holding off Ajax

Feyenoord win first Eredivisie title in 18 years after holding off Ajax

An estimated 150,000 fans flooded the Coolsingel in Rotterdam on Monday to celebrate Feyenoord's first Eredivisie title since 1999.

Thousands of fans in the city center watched on large screens and roared in delight after Kuyt's early opener and again 11 minutes later. A stunning hat-trick from Dirk Kuyt ensured a comfortable 3-1 against Heracles to hold off Ajax Amsterdam.

Feyenoord, coached by former Arsenal and Barcelona player Giovanni van Bronckhorst, had a chance to secure the championship last week, but were surprisingly beaten 3-0 by neighbours Excelsior Rotterdam in a nervy performance, which also left their fans in St. Maarten astounded.

Heading into the final game of the Eredivise season Feyenoord sat one point above Ajax at the top of the table, knowing that any slip up could see their arch-rivals overtake them and lift the title. The club from Eindhoven could not defend the title, finishing in third place.

"I've played in a Champions League final and in a World Cup final and at very popular clubs".

JUBILANT Feyenoord fans poured into the streets of Rotterdam a day after their club won the Dutch league title.

Even now, at the age of 36, he's scoring important goals for Feyenoord.

Van Bronckhorst was lucky to hold onto his job previous year after the team slumped to seven straight defeats, but the club kept faith in the former Feyenoord, Barcelona, Arsenal and Rangers defender and he delivered.

"I have sacrificed a lot of money returning to Feyenoord, but it is worth every penny", he said after victory over Heracles Almelo.
