Former US Attorney Barbara McQuade: Comey Firing Threatens FBI's Independence

Former US Attorney Barbara McQuade: Comey Firing Threatens FBI's Independence

I happen to have lawyers, unrelated lawyers and they would say wow, she's guilty here, guilty.

While Democrats continue to decry the timing of Comey's firing was a way to short-circuit the ongoing counterintelligence probe, Trump tweeted that is is all politics: "Again, the story that there was collusion between the Russians & Trump campaign was fabricated by Dems as an excuse for losing the election".

That coverage of the Comey story prompted the Friday tweet storm from the president, who also continued to loudly deny that he or his team had anything to do with Russia's hacking Democrats during the 2016 election.

The New York Times said Comey has told associates he declined to make a pledge of loyalty to Trump when the president requested it as the pair had dinner at the White House just seven days after his inauguration.

In a striking reversal one day earlier, President Trump told NBC News that he planned to fire Comey even before meeting with top-ranking Justice Department officials and soliciting their recommendations on his performance.

Mr Trump also hit back on Friday at media reports questioning the credibility of White House accounts of why Mr Comey was sacked, which have changed over the course of the week, and threatened an end to regular White House press briefings.

The next director will immediately be confronted with oversight of an FBI investigation into possible coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign, an inquiry the bureau's acting head, Andrew McCabe, has called "highly significant".

White House press secretary Sean Spicer on Friday rejected the idea that Trump asked Comey to pledge his loyalty.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation probe and parallel congressional investigations have cast a cloud over Trump's presidency since he took office on January 20, threatening to overwhelm his policy priorities. "We've got to address that", said Democratic Representative Elijah Cummings, referring to Trump's behavior with Comey, including the report that the president asked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation director's loyalty. Cornyn is the No. 2 Republican in the Senate. "I think the President wants loyalty to his country and to the rule of law", Spicer said.

"In the decade that I worked for Mr. Trump, I have never seen a recording device attached to his phone, nor am I aware of any occasion where he taped a conversation", Cohen said.

Trump abruptly fired Comey on Tuesday and later said Comey was a "showboat" and "grandstander" who was not doing a good job.

The FBI director serves a 10-year term but can be replaced by the president. Eight met at the Justice Department on Saturday with Attorney General Jeff Sessions and his deputy, Rod Rosenstein. Democrats will also try to use a procedural maneuver to force a vote on legislation calling for an independent commission to investigate Russian election interference, although they're unlikely to prevail.

Clapper and Schumer made their comments on CNN's "State of the Union"; Graham spoke on NBC's "Meet the Press"; and Warner appeared on ABC's "This Week" and "Fox News Sunday".
