Law Enforcement Memorial Service in Marshall

Law Enforcement Memorial Service in Marshall

This week, the United States will honor our courageous law enforcement officers during National Police Week.

Wednesday marked the 30th year local authorities and civic leaders have recognized the week with a ceremony.

IACLEA President Randy Burba and other officials salute fallen officers.

This is Police Week, by presidential proclamation, a time to give due recognition and appreciation to the men and women who risk their lives every day of every week to keep the rest of us safe. "Not only have we faced much loss, but also much criticism and scrutiny".

"May today be the beginning of a new era of respect and appreciation for law enforcement".

He was the first DART officer killed in the line of duty in the department's history and died just two weeks before his 44th birthday.

Interim DPD Chief David Pughes led the march to the memorial.

McDaniel also said it is important that officers follow procedure. "It's an honorable profession".

He said one woman, participating in the walk to honor her husband's memory, grew tired from the physical activity. She hopes that going forward, citizens will think to be considerate of law enforcement and of one another. "Everybody knows this job is risky, but go out every day thinking in your mind that you may be put in that same position".

So the month of May brings us flowers, good weather and most importantly National Police Week. Though she has been on patrol in Bryan for almost nine years, she hasn't attended the annual memorial service until this year. Dowd said, "In a sense, they are fighting a war, and that war is a war on an ever-growing criminal population that is mainly funded by the use and sale of illegal drugs". "Their names could have been called here".

President Donald Trump recognizes the importance of paying tribute to fallen officers, and the need to help protect those in the line of duty as their jobs become increasingly more risky. He said the ceremony was bittersweet. "We all wish [the attack] wouldn't have happened, and we all pray that nothing like it ever happens again". They talked about the importance of the day and that it's not we versus law enforcement but we versus the forces of evil. "All of those improvements are little consolidation to the families, loved ones, and colleagues, of those officers who no longer return home at the end of their shift", Wynn said.

"This is a community event", Myrick said. There was just officers from cities and counties all over the country who made a decision to have a little fun together. "When they die, the whole community suffers". "The agency needs to know that officer is emotionally stable". McCollum sat with his little sister, Cynthia Funderbunk, and other family. "With their service comes great risk and sacrifice", Santa Maria Police Lt. Dan Cohen said at the start of Wednesday's gathering. The numbers I see that come out of our Crimes Against Peace Officers Unit are always staggering because, to me, they are more than just another filed case or sentencing.
