Manning has attire discretion under Army status

Manning has attire discretion under Army status

She also tweeted a photo of her feet, clad in black, low-top Converse Chuck Taylors, with the caption, "First steps of freedom!"

Army Pvt. Chelsea Manning has left a military prison in Kansas and returned to civilian life Wednesday, seven years after being taken into custody for what is seen as the largest leak of classified data in USA history.

Amnesty International, which had campaigned for Manning's release, was quick to applaud the decision.

Manning, who is transgender, will remain an active-duty solider while her court-martial conviction is under appeal and will continue to be eligible for healthcare benefits.

She was convicted in 2013 for leaking classified information related to the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars, which was later released by WikiLeaks. Her subsequent arrest, court martial, conviction for espionage and theft, and the state of her imprisonment, have been closely followed by the media and her supporters for years.

Manning transitioned from male to female while she was in prison for giving classified materials to the website WikiLeaks.

She has already served seven years in prison ranking as the double the second longest sentence recorded in any leak case. Manning doesn't seem to be deterred by the negativity, however, and instead, she shared a new profile photo.

NBC News described the legalities of Manning's current status and how that impacts her release as they spoke with Chelsea Manning's attorney David Coombs.

Hawkins was planning to film Manning as she was released from prison Wednesday.

In a brief statement, she said she was focused on the future, which "is far more important than the past". According to Strangio, Manning became "the first military prisoner to receive health care related to gender transition and was part of a shift in practice that lead to the elimination of the ban on open trans service in the military". In the NBC News article, another of Manning's attorneys discussed the freedom Chelsea now has to express her true gender identity. She was acquitted of the most serious charge, aiding the enemy.

Manning had been sentenced to a 35-year prison term and was freed 28 years early after President Obama commuted the bulk of her sentence before leaving office. She later apologised for "hurting the United States". She was also placed in solitary several times during her incarceration at Leavenworth following her sentencing.

The effort to get President Obama to commute Manning's sentence was supported by a network of activists.
