Nadal through to last-16 in Rome after Almagro injury

The Spaniard is attempting to win the title for an eighth time as he continues his preparation for Roland Garros, and he was able to benefit from Almagro's early withdrawal.

The American 13th seed was broken in his first service game of the second set but hit back immediately to reassert himself in the match before Nadal secured the pivotal break at 4-4.

"I don't think being No 1 affects on play a little bit worse, no?"

The 13th-seeded Sock won the final six points of the match to finally prevail in two hours, 35 minutes over Vesely and advance to Thursday's third round.

"Here I am in Rome, I'm here to keep trying my best in an event that I love so much". I know (it) is a tough tournament.

The 30-year-old Nadal is set to play the next round against the victor of the duel between American Jack Sock and Czech Jiri Vesely.

"Grass obviously is where he feels the most comfortable", Djokovic said. "I have the big one in July - the SkiStar Swedish Open clay tournament - before the last big tournament for the season before the Tour Finals, the Generali Open clay tournament in Austria".

Third seed Stan Wawrinka was also in action later on Tuesday against unpredictable Frenchman Benoit Paire, who beat him on clay in Madrid last week. "Maybe I have a little bit less to lose than he does", Isner said.

Defending champion and men's No. 1 Andy Murray crashed out after losing 6-2, 6-4 to Fabio Fognini yesterday morning (Singapore time). "I think he's watched Rafa and seen the wonderful form Rafa's in, and realised he'd have no chance of beating him on a surface on which Rafa has always dominated him throughout the years", the Aussie told Tennis Mash, via Yahoo Sports.

Second-seeded Karolina Pliskova defeated Lauren Davis of the United States 6-1 6-1 and sixth-seeded Simona Halep beat Laura Siegemund of Germany 6-4 6-4. The 30-year-old was at a loss for words with regards to his current form, but remained confident that he could turn it around.

Qualifier Daria Gavrilova beat seventh-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 and Kiki Bertens won 7-6 (3), 6-1 over Russia's Ekaterina Makarova.
