Pointfest Is Canceled in Wake of Chris Cornell's Death

The medical examiner's office in Detroit is conducting an autopsy on the body of rocker Chris Cornell, who died Wednesday night. "His wife Vicky and family were shocked to learn of his sudden and unexpected passing, and they will be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause", said the rep.

A full autopsy report, including toxicology results, has not yet been completed. "There is no additional information at this time".

Soundgarden predated both grunge pioneers Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but it wasn't an overnight success.

"In some ways, they (Soundgarden) were the last band in Seattle to become famous in the grunge era but they were the ones who worked the hardest and the longest", Cross said. "There's no reason that I would think I know how to define it, but it's always been there". The band's first single appeared on the 1986 CZ compilation, Deep Six, which is widely considered one of the first albums to feature Seattle's "grunge" sound.

Soundgarden, "Black Hole Sun" There's no talking about the range of Cornell's voice without pointing out the song that thrust it into the spotlight: Soundgarden's breakthrough hit "Black Hole Sun".

A bench near the center of the sculpture was covered with flower arrangements, one of which included a note, "Say "hello" to Heaven", a reference to a song written by Cornell for a musician friend who died decades ago. Soundgarden, which includes guitarist Kim Thayil, bassist Ben Shepherd and drummer Matt Cameron, disbanded in 1997, but reunited in 2010.

Cornell formed Audioslave in 2001 with former Rage Against The Machine members Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk.

"Chris Cornell's lyrics + voice have loomed large for me since '94".

Cornell also released five solo albums and recorded three albums with Audioslave.

"The "no such thing as nothing" line comes from the concepts that humans don't really have a flat line until we're dead". If they don't have enough money it's not that they have no money, they actually have something and it's called poverty. This year's Pointfest has been a turbulent one, with last week's headliner, Korn, cancelling at the last minute as singer Jonathon Davis was instructed by a doctor to go on "mandatory vocal rest".

The music industry mourned his sudden death online. And I loved the music that would come to be regarded by the previous generation, Generation X, as not almost as cool as Soundgarden's "earlier work".

KEXP will have a tribute and moment of silence for Cornell outside its studios at 5 p.m. Thursday.
