Police chief shot in upstate NY, suspect killed by officer

Authorities say shots were exchanged when Amthor was trying to remove Bostick from his apartment on Abby Avenue Tuesday during a domestic incident with his girlfriend that started the night before. Tripodo says officers then went in and found the man dead and nobody else in the house. Amthor doubles as town and village police chief.

The police chief in the village of Maybrook in Orange County has been shot during a standoff with a suspect. The extend of their injuries are unknown at this time but Trooper Steven Nevel says the officer is expected to survive.

The suspect is now barricaded in a residence, which was still ongoing later Tuesday morning with New York State Troopers on the scene.

In a subsequent press release from his office, Neuhaus said Amthor had been shot in the shoulder.

Neuhaus said the shooting "serves as a reminder of the dangers of police work and how deserving of our support and encouragement law enforcement is".

Authorities say troopers and a police negotiator are on scene. The chief was said to be conscious and talking when he was taken to the hospital. Officers are wearing helmets and vests, and some are carrying assault rifles.
