Tornadoes in Wisconsin, Oklahoma leave 2 dead

Emergency officials are reporting seven homes destroyed, according to the state's emergency management agency. The NWS has confirmed one person was killed in Barron County and more than 25 other people were hurt. Cattle are killed, but there is no report of people being injured. Barron County sheriff's officials say those that remain hospitalized with storm injuries are expected to survive.

A Barron County tornado survivor says a phone call from his dad is the reason he, his fiancé and their unborn baby were still alive Wednesday.

The apparent tornado damage was near Chetek, WI, Mobile home Park known as Prairie Lake Estates.

The enhanced F-scale runs from EF0 to EF5.

A high risk, which is rare, is a category 5 risk on a scale of 1-5 (with five being the most significant).

The storms hit late in the afternoon Tuesday and into the evening, leveling a mobile home park near Chetek, Wisconsin, about 110 miles northeast of Minneapolis.

The two tornado deaths from Tuesday's storms bring the nation's 2017 total up to 34 fatalities, more than 2016 in its entirety (18) and nearly as many as 2015 (36), according to Patrick Marsh, the warning coordination meteorologist at the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center.

News 18 received several pictures of tornado in the Barron area.

Elk City, Oklahoma bore the brunt of the damage, with dozens of homes visibly destroyed after a tornado ripped through the small city, an NBC affiliate station reported. About 7 percent of the state, mostly in southeast Oklahoma, remains under moderate drought classification this week.

Zimmerman says one person suffered minor injuries and that the tiny community of Pawnee Rock is "very fortunate" that the twister struck a largely rural area. Then he saw a funnel cloud and ran inside.

"I've lived in Oklahoma nearly 50 years", he said.

"I want to thank all the area emergency personnel for their response and the outpouring of support for the resident's who are displaced - special thanks to Mosaic Telecom, The Red Cross, and the Salvation Army for setting up a shelter and providing food and clothes for these families".

At least one person died when a tornado hit a housing subdivision in Oklahoma.

When the SPC talks about strong tornadoes, they're referring to tornadoes that are EF-2 or stronger on the Fujita Scale - the types of tornadoes that do the worst damage. A stand of trees just east of the trailer park was reduced to a clump of trunks, with hundreds of articles of clothing and pieces of insulation dangling from them like surrender flags.

"We hung on to each other", Mark Tyson said.

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin tweeted her thoughts and prayers to those affected.

Tyson was hanging around the fringes of the trailer park hoping authorities would let him back in to check on his property and, hopefully, find some clothes. According to the Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs, about 40 trailer homes were destroyed by the tornado.

"She got crushed under the stuff", Schneider said.

In eastern Nebraska, winds damaged homes, farms and businesses and left thousands of people without electricity. Gusts of 85mph (135kph) were recorded at the weather service's office in Valley, west of Omaha. Lightning blew siding and bricks off a home in Lincoln and a funnel cloud was spotted about 40 miles (65 kilometers) southwest of the city, near Exeter, but no damage was reported.

Powerful storms killed at least two people in the central over 20 reports of tornadoes poured in.
