Trump Campaign Had 18 Undisclosed Contacts With Russia, Sought Back Channel

Trump Campaign Had 18 Undisclosed Contacts With Russia, Sought Back Channel

In January, Trump simply said "No" when a reporter asked if his campaign staff was in contact with Russian Federation.

The identities of other Russian or Trump advisers who were in contact are being kept under wraps in intelligence reports due to privacy laws. The White House and advisers to the campaign have since confirmed four meetings between Kislyak and Trump advisers during that time.

According to the latest Reuters report, the sources say that the latest 18 pieces of contact information (all of which may have not been reviewed to date) have as yet not revealed any wrongdoing or collusion with the Russians.

Paul Joseph Watson, editor-at-large of one of Trump's favorite websites, InfoWars, used that sentence to dismiss the entire Trump-Russia investigation as the "witch hunt" Trump himself called it in a Thursday morning tweet.

In a written statement, Trump insisted anew there were no nefarious ties between his campaign and Russian Federation. Current and former officials familiar with the calls and emails told Reuters that six of the contacts were phone calls between former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and Russia's ambassador to the U.S., Sergey Kislyak.

Conversations between Mr Flynn and Mr Kislyak accelerated after the Nov 8 vote as the two discussed establishing a back channel for communication between Mr Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin that could bypass the U.S. national security bureaucracy, which both sides considered hostile to improved relations, four current USA officials said. But the news agency pointed out that the disclosure could likely increase the pressure on Trump and his aides to provide the FBI and congressional investigations with a full account of interactions with Russian officials and others with links to Moscow during and after the 2016 election, something the Trump administration has been reluctant to do.

Reuters said it was did not receive any comments about the claims from White House, Flynn's lawyer, or the Russian Foreign Ministry.

On Feb. 14, Trump allegedly asked former FBI director James Comey during a private meeting to drop the bureau's investigation into Flynn. Mueller will head the FBI investigation that began last July. The remaining 12 involved calls, texts, or emails to various Russians who are regarded as being close to President Vladimir Putin.

It was not clear with whom Medvedchuk was in contact within the Trump campaign but the themes included US-Russia cooperation, the sources said. Putin is the godfather to Medvedchuk's daughter.

"I am not acquainted with any of Donald Trump's close associates, therefore no such conversation could have taken place", he said.

On April 3, European and Arab officials disclosed that Erik Prince, brother of Secretary of State Betsy DeVos and founder of the controversial Blackwater security firm, met with a Russian official to discuss opening up a back channel line of communication between Trump and the Russian government. -Russian economic relations. Russian officials said they wanted to take a more business-like approach to deal making and focus less on hot-button issues that have cooled relations between the nations in the last few years.
