Afghan soldier attacks foreign soldiers, wounding 4

An apparent insider attack in northern Afghanistan on Saturday left some USA troops wounded, US and Afghan officials said.

The attack on Saturday took place at the Afghan National Army's 209th Corps headquarters in the province of Balkh, located some 540 km to the northwest of Kabul. USA soldiers have been wounded.

Last week, a Taliban infiltrator in the Afghan army shot two US soldiers dead before being killed.

If confirmed, the insider attack would be the second in a week in Afghanistan. Earlier reports said four foreigners were killed in an apparent attack by an Afghan soldier at an Afghan military base.

An investigation has been launched into the incident, he added but did not detail the incident.

The gunman - an Afghan - had been shot and killed, the spokesman said.

Camp Shaheen, where the 209th Corps is based, was also the site of a large Taliban attack in April that left hundreds of Afghan soldiers dead. US soldiers have been wounded.

The attack appears to have been a "green-on-blue" act by an Afghan soldier, a coalition official told CNN.

More information will be provided as it becomes available, they said.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said this week that he will present a new USA military strategy for Afghanistan, along with adjusted troop numbers, in the coming weeks to President Donald Trump. The brazen assault, which came as Mattis arrived in Afghanistan, led to the dismissal of Afghanistan's top defense officials by President Ashraf Ghani.
