Camille Cosby releases scathing statement following mistrial, calls media 'blatantly vicious'

Camille Cosby releases scathing statement following mistrial, calls media 'blatantly vicious'

Bill Cosby leaves the Montgomery County Courthouse during his sexual assault trial, Friday, June 16, 2017, in Norristown, Pa.

Jury questions posed during Bill Cosby's sex assault trial.

A judge declared a mistrial after a jury was deadlocked in Cosby's trial for the alleged 2004 rape of Andrea Constand.

The mistrial declared Saturday underscored a wider struggle to reconcile the disconnect between prosecutors' depiction of Cosby as a sexual predator and his long run as one of our most beloved entertainers.

Cosby's legal and publicity team walked out of the courtroom feeling very good about themselves, as to be expected.

The public could only judge Cosby via media reports - including the unproven allegations of dozens of other women, whose accounts, stretching back to the 1960s, largely echo Constand's.

Lawyers for Cosby, 79, have said throughout that their client is innocent of all accusations.

Steele declined comment on a statement from Cosby's wife, Camille, which called him "heinously and exploitively ambitious".

Constand is the only one of Cosby's accusers to have her day in criminal court.

Dunham, who in 2014 wrote about a sexual assault committed against her, said Saturday that "Bill Cosby's trial is about much more than Bill Cosby", in a series of tweets. He pleaded not guilty to all charges, and has repeatedly denied similar claims from numerous other women. I told you that when you look over here, you'll see different things: "You'll see a great comedian, an artist, who taught us not only how to smile but how to love".

"Too often these types of crimes, sexual assaults, do not get reported, especially cases where a drug has been used in a drug-facilitated sexual assault", Steele said.

"We can never underestimate the blinding power of celebrity, but justice will come", said Gloria Allred, an attorney who represents many of Cosby's accusers.

"How do I describe many, but not all, general media?"

On Friday, the jury asked to review multiple pieces of evidence, including Cosby's decade-old deposition testimony about quaaludes.

"We are confident that these proceedings have given a voice to the many victims who felt powerless and silenced", they added. A mistrial is not a victory for either side.

Constand testified that the pills, which she said Cosby suggested were herbal, left her disoriented and unable to resist him.

Cosby has been an icon in the black community following a successful career in comedy, including playing the lead role in his eponymous Cosby Show, which ran for almost a decade from 1984 until 1992.

But it was his reputation as a public moralist who urged young people to pull up their saggy trousers and start acting responsibly that prompted a federal judge to unseal portions of an explosive deposition he gave more than a decade ago as part of Constand's civil lawsuit against him. Cosby admitted under oath that he procured sedatives for the goal of giving them to young women with whom he wanted to have sex. She said she found Cosby at the bottom of the stairs; he gave her a muffin before opening the door and letting her out. "And then you drugged her and you did what you wanted". Each of the three counts of aggravated indecent assault against Cosby carries a maximum 10-year prison term, though the counts could be merged at sentencing if he is convicted. Overtly arrogant, collaborating with the district attorney. Cosby was charged shortly before the statute of limitation was set to expire. He confirmed that Cosby's accuser Andrea Constand, a former sports director from Temple University, has agreed to cooperate with his office.
