Canadiens send defenceman Nathan Beaulieu to Sabres for third-round pick

Buffalo sent a third round pick (68th overall) to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Nathan Beaulieu.

New coach Claude Julien didn't have a lot of faith in him either as Beaulieu was a healthy scratch for Game-6 of the Habs/NY Rangers series.

Beaulieu opened the season on Montreal's opening line before falling down on the depth chart throughout the year.

The deal was made less than two hours before the Expansion Draft trade freeze and will allow the Canadiens to protect a different blueliner with their third protection slot (one of Jordie Benn, Brandon Davidson, or Alexei Emelin).

Beaulieu, 24, was the Habs' first-round pick in 2011.

"Beaulieu (age 24, 6'2", 205 pounds) appeared in his fifth National Hockey League season with the Canadiens in 2016-17, logging career highs in games played (74), goals (4), assists (24) and points (28).

We won't know until next week, but the Sabres did themselves some good by landing a d-man like Beaulieu.

The 24-year-old Strathroy, Ont., native was drafted by the Canadiens in 2011 with the 17th overall pick.
