Deputy AG Rosenstein set for budget hearing Tuesday

Deputy AG Rosenstein set for budget hearing Tuesday

Speaking earlier, House Speaker Paul Ryan said politicians should allow the special counsel to do his work. In his testimony to the Senate last week, James Comey made clear why he didn't want to accede to Trump's request to publicize that fact: because there was a less than zero chance that the president might become a target in the future-and then the Federal Bureau of Investigation would have to make the fact public.

Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mueller, declined to comment on Ruddy's remarks.

Doubt, however, has been cast on that explanation because of cryptic testimony from former FBI Director James Comey last week.

"I'm not a flak for the White House".

In a weird, televised cabinet meeting on Monday that forced even non-partisan news agencies such as Reuters and AP to drop their impersonal tone, Trump called on his cabinet members to boost his administration, after claiming that "Never has there been a president, with few exceptions. who has passed more legislation, done more things". But Ruddy may be floating the idea only to get it shot down; "Chris speaks for himself", said White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders. If Rosenstein refused, Trump could fire Rosenstein.

Schiff says that if Trump fires Mueller, Congress might name its own independent counsel to investigate the case. Justice Department rules prohibit the dismissal of a special counsel without cause.

Mueller was appointed on May 17 by the Justice Department as special counsel overseeing the investigation into Russia's alleged meddling in the 2016 United States elections and related matters.

Other Trump supporters homed in on the sequence of Mueller's job interviews.

On Monday night, Chris Ruddy, a friend of President Trump's, told "PBS NewsHour" host Judy Woodruff that the president was "considering perhaps terminating the special counsel" appointed to oversee the Russian Federation investigation, Robert Mueller. If Trump were to make such a move, he would have to order Rosenstein to fire Mueller.

"He did not hire a single Republican in the first wave", Gingrich said. He said he would agree to dismiss Mueller only if there were a legitimate basis to do so. He said Trump hadn't asked questions about the special counsel, but unless there were "good cause" to fire Mueller, Rosenstein said, "it wouldn't matter what anybody said".

"(Attorney General) Jeff Sessions is recused here, so it would be up to (Deputy Attorney General) Rod Rosenstein, who was the person who just appointed Bob Mueller a couple of weeks ago".

They say Mr Trump did not collude with Russian Federation and see the investigation as a politically-motivated sham that handicaps his ability to execute his agenda, according to one person who advises the White House on how to handle the probe.

Even so, Mr Gingrich said, Mr Trump will not seek to dismiss Mr Mueller because he is confident the probe will conclude he has done nothing wrong. Newt Gingrich, who is close to Trump, tweeted: "Republicans are delusional if they think the special counsel is going to be fair".

Even Jay Sekulow, a member of Trump's legal team, said, "I can't imagine that that issue is going to arise", when asked about the possibility of firing Mueller on the same program Sunday.

"Bob Mueller has the integrity to call them as he sees them", Starr said Monday in an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America" before Ruddy spoke.
