Friend says Trump is considering 'terminating' Mueller

The sound of sharpening knives echoed everywhere Monday.

"He's weighing that option", said Chris Ruddy, Newsmax CEO and friend of Trump on PBS NewsHour Monday evening.

"The President did talk with him in the days before he was named special counsel", Ruddy told PBS on Monday in the same interview where he said Trump was "considering terminating" Mueller as special counsel. She asked whether he has seen "any evidence of good cause" to fire Mueller.

Others sounded more enthusiastic about dropping the axe.

Trump does have the authority to remove the special counsel. To understand Trump's next move, look at who Mueller is hiring. Check (political donation) reports. Mueller's team includes big Democrat donors. Still, he said: "Bob Mueller did a great job as Federal Bureau of Investigation director". Well, we're not briefing the Oval Office about investigations either, so I don't know how they would get there.

Mueller has scheduled interviews with key national security officials about the matter. Comey endorsed Mueller's appointment when he appeared last week before the Senate Intelligence Committee, further angering Trump and his staff.

Comey and Mueller have been friends for almost 15 years. As for critics calling him a hypocrite changing his mind on Mueller so suddenly, he offered the following explanation.

Sessions then recused himself in March from overseeing the FBI's Russian Federation probe and delegated that authority to his new deputy attorney general, Rod J. Rosenstein.

The hires could be an indication of the direction of the probe and the seriousness with which Mr Mueller is taking the enterprise. "I don't know Sen".

Both Gingrich and Ken Starr were closely involved in the investigation and impeachment of former President Bill Clinton.

Could the president get rid of the independent counsel leading the Russian Federation investigation? Policy-makers created new limits on the investigator's power and placed it under the accountability of the government.

"He is being advised by many people not to do it", the source said. "Under the regulation, special counsel Mueller may be fired for only good cause, and I am required to put that cause in writing".

Either of those actions was unthinkable to us back in 1999, for we understood that President Richard Nixon's attempt in this regard ultimately led to his downfall. At the same time, after Trump's firing of ...

Even so, Gingrich said, Trump won't seek to dismiss Mueller because he's confident the probe will conclude he's done nothing wrong.

"Some key allies of President Trump are already making the case for dismissing".

"At some point it becomes an exercise in futility", said Andrew Herman, Counsel at the Washington law firm Miller and Chevalier. In fact, Trump has already argued that all these controversies are hampering his ability to fix relations with Russian Federation.

On the other hand, 2017 is a different time from 1973.

Such an action, though, would be politically perilous. "The termination of Mueller would amount to an admission of guilt and obstruction of justice".

Trump's team has used this admission to try and color Comey and suggest he's an unreliable witness, even though he testified under oath.

"And who appoints your replacement?"

Tuesday morning, Trump supporter Ari Fleischer, who served as President George W. Bush's press secretary, again highlighted the issue of Mueller's probe being handled by attorneys who have donated mostly to Democrats, a message that Donald Trump Jr. quickly retweeted to his own 1.7 million followers. But is there such a thing as an "infinite dare"?

Just weeks ago, Gingrich had heaped praise on Mueller, hailing him as a "superb choice" for special counsel whose reputation was "impeccable for honesty and integrity".
