Sailors Missing After US Destroyer Collides with Merchant Ship in Pacific

The US Navy also said that the ship suffered damage on starboard side, above and below the waterline, and that it had begun to take on water.

"This has been a hard day", Vice Adm. Joseph P. Aucoin, the commander of the US 7th Fleet, said in a statement. They were later joined by Japan's Self-Defense Forces.

An injured USS Fitzgerald crewmember is carried by U.S. military personnel and Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force members upon arriving to the U.S. Naval base in Yokosuka.

The United States has primary jurisdiction regarding incidents involving members of USA forces under the bilateral status of forces agreement.

The Philippine-flagged Crystal is almost four times as large as the Fitzgerald, an Aegis guided missile destroyer.

"All of our thoughts and prayers are with the Fitzgerald crew and their families".

The waterways approaching Tokyo Bay are busy with commercial vessels sailing to and from Japan's two biggest container ports in Tokyo and Yokohama.

At least three other Navy sailors were injured in the crash.

Family members are frantically seeking news, appealing via social media for sailors aboard the ship to get in touch.

Televised media reports showed that the 154 meter-long US guided-missile destroyer had suffered considerable damage to its right side, although the destroyer, part of the USA 7th Fleet, returned to the Yokosuka Naval Base in Kanagawa Prefecture, about 50 km southwest of Tokyo, unassisted.

The vessel was taking on water after the incident, but the crew was working to stabilize the ship by pumping water out of the hold, a US Navy official told CNN.

"This has been a hard day", Vice Admiral Joseph Aucoin, commander of the USA 7th Fleet, said in a statement. "I am humbled by the bravery and tenacity of the Fitzgerald crew".

The Fitzgerald maintains constant contact with Japan as it is forward-based in Yokosuka.

Benson took command of the Fitzgerald on May 13. Bryce Benson, "who was transferred to U.S. Naval Hospital Yokosuka and is reportedly in stable condition", the 7th Fleet says in a statement.

Two other crew members suffered cuts and bruises and were evacuated. It was unclear how many others may have been hurt.

United States and Japanese crafts scoured the spot where the collision happened, about 56 nautical miles southwest Yokosuka and 12 miles off the Izu Peninsula.

The merchant vessel with which the Fitzgerald collided is the ACX Crystal, a container ship flagged in the Philippines, officials said.

Japan's Nippon Yusen KK, which charters the container ship ACX Crystal, said in a statement it would "cooperate fully" with the Coast Guard's investigation of the incident.

President Donald Trump has thanked Japan for its help in the search for seven Navy sailors who are missing after their USA destroyer collided with a container ship.

The accident happened 56 nautical miles (104 kilometers) southwest of the base, the US Navy said.

The Philippine-flagged ACX Crystal was berthed at Tokyo's Oi wharf, where officials were questioning the crew about the cause of the nighttime crash.

It was not immediately clear what caused the collision.

The names of those missing have not been made public yet, pending notification of family members.

"So anxious. Just need to hear she is OK".

Rita Schrimsher of Athens, Alabama, said "of course we're nervous and scared and just praying".
