Talks on propping up UK PM May's Conservatives are "very positive"

Talks on propping up UK PM May's Conservatives are

A senior Conservative source said talks will continue this afternoon and the State Opening of Parliament has been set for Wednesday.

Sky's David Blevins says sources have confirmed that there is still no agreement yet between the Conservatives and the DUP, despite Mrs Leadsom confirming the Queen's Speech.

Theresa May has signalled she will publish her Queen's Speech programme for government with or without an agreement with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).

The State Opening was initially scheduled for June 19 - the same date when Brexit negotiations were due to begin in Brussels. "However while talks are ongoing it is important the government gets on with its business and we are confident there will be sufficient support across the house for passing the Queen's speech".

In a statement, Ms Leadsom said: "The Government has agreed with Buckingham Palace that the State Opening of Parliament will take place on 21 June 2017".

Others, such as former premier Sir John Major, have warned that any formal arrangement would undermine the fragile Northern Ireland peace process.

With eight seats short of an overall majority, the co-operation from the 10 DUP members will ensure May has a majority to see through her program of measures in the next session of parliament.

The event, which marks the start of the parliamentary year, had been due to take place on Monday - the same day as the start of Brexit negotiations.

Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams said he "told Theresa May directly that she is in breach of the Good Friday Agreement" by undermining the United Kingdom government's role as an impartial guarantor.

Mrs Leadsom said: "Whilst our top priority right now is supporting the victims of the bad tragedy at Grenfell Tower, we also need to look ahead by setting out a legislative programme that not only delivers a successful European Union exit but also a domestic agenda which aims to tackle the social injustices in our country".

Republican party Sinn Fein have stressed that they will be seeking reassurances over any deal with the unionists.
