WaPo Reports Special Counsel Is Investigating Jared Kushner's Business Dealings

WaPo Reports Special Counsel Is Investigating Jared Kushner's Business Dealings

He also has millions of followers on his official Facebook pages.

USA TODAY previously reported that the FBI was investigating Kushner for his contact with Russian officials, but there was no word at that time that his financial dealings were part of the probe.

The officials who described the financial focus of the investigation spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. The Washington Post report suggests that scrutiny has been folded into the special counsel office and includes Kushner's business dealings, though it offers no details on what that scrutiny is.

Vnesheconombank says that Gorkov's meeting with Kushner was to discuss real estate business, of which the president's son-in-law was the head. The meeting occurred as Kushner's company had been seeking financing for its troubled $1.8 billion purchase of an office building on Fifth Avenue in NY, and it could raise questions about whether Kushner's personal financial interests were colliding with his impending role as a public official.

However, Mueller's investigation is in a relatively early phase, and it is unclear whether criminal charges will be brought when it is complete, U.S. officials familiar with the matter told The Washington Post on Thursday.

"We do not know what this report refers to", attorney Jamie Gorelick said in a statement. "It would be standard practice for the special counsel to examine financial records to look for anything related to Russian Federation".

U.S. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has privately acknowledged he may need to recuse himself from matters relating to the Russian Federation probe, given that he could become a potential witness in the investigation, ABC News reported on Friday, citing unnamed sources.

'He will do the same if he is contacted in connection with any other inquiry'.

Kushner has agreed to talk to the Senate Intelligence committee and is expected to discuss these matters with the Senate intelligence staff, though the timing is still being worked out.

Mueller is also investigating whether President Donald Trump attempted to obstruct justice, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

Trump on Thursday tweeted that the investigation was "the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!"

Although Rosenstein's memo was extremely critical of former FBI Director James B. Comey, he technically did not formally recommend that Trump fire him.

"The message the president is sending through his tweets is that he believes the rule of law doesn't apply to him and that anyone who thinks otherwise will be fired", said Feinstein.

Sessions learned of the Mueller appointment at about the same time that the press was told, according to people briefed on the matter.

Comey testified that not everyone on his Federal Bureau of Investigation team agreed he should.

Mark Corallo, a spokesman for Trump's outside attorney, Marc Kasowitz, slammed the Post's reporting.

A close Trump associate said this week the president was considering firing Mueller, although the White House later denied it.

Trump has told associates he has the legal authority to fire Mueller.

President Donald Trump walks with National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster from the Oval Office to Marine One on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, Friday, June 16, 2017, for a short trip to Andrews Air Force Base, . Miller said it could be in Trump's best interest if Mueller moves quickly with the probe.

Comey testified last week that he also felt pressured to drop the Flynn probe.

Comey told lawmakers he gave notes he had taken after that meeting and his other eight meetings or phone calls he had with Trump to Mueller. The newspaper noted Mueller had requested interviews with CIA Director Dan Coats, National Security Agency chief Michael Rogers and Richard Ledgett, the former NSA deputy director.
