'Cars 3' speeds to No. 1, Tupac biopic nets strong debut

'Cars 3' speeds to No. 1, Tupac biopic nets strong debut

The third installment in Pixar's Cars franchise saw the animated feature debut with an estimated $53.5 million domestically and $21.3 million internationally. Almost $13 million from 2,471 locations on Friday will put "Eyez" at around $31 million by end of day Sunday, beating out "Wonder Woman's" $11 million Friday estimate.

In second place with $40 million is "Wonder Woman", which continues to be a cash cow for Warner Bros./DCEU with a domestic total of $274 million and over $500 million worldwide.

To sum it all up: Congrats, Cars 3, on a great opening weekend, and congrats, Wonder Woman, for continuing to kick ass in theaters the world over. That's lower than the openings of "Cars" ($60.1 million) and "Cars 2" ($66.1).

Following the opening, sales should be brisk, as like the original, Cars 3 earned an A Cinemascore, beating the A- that Cars 2 earned.

However, Pixar doesn't seem anxious about the film's performance, with Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis telling Variety that Cars is still "a very important franchise for the company".

In third place with a solid $27 million from 2,471 theaters was Lionsgate's Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez On Me. Blindsided by a new generation of racing cars and facing relegation from the sport he loves, McQueen enlists the help of a young technician, voiced by Cristela Alonzo. Of the quartet, it was Disney/Pixar's Cars 3 and Lionsgate's All Eyez On Me that raced to the finish line in style while Sony's Rough Night and Entertainment's 47 Meters Down both encountered engine trouble. Every other Pixar theatrical release has earned a fresh rating of 75% or higher, but the Cars series goes 0 for 3. The release date aligns with what would have been Shakur's 46th birthday.

The Mummy followed at No. 4 with $1.9 million from 4,034 locations for a domestic total of $5.5 through Sunday.

Sony Pictures' R-rated comedy "Rough Night", featuring Scarlett Johansson and Kate McKinnon, was a miss with a take of $8.1 million, or only about half of the $16 million projection of BoxOfficePro.com. The project combines the talents of director and co-writer Lucia Aniello, co-writer and actor Paul W. Downs, and star Ilana Glazer - the three are frequent collaborators on Comedy Central's "Broad City" and "Time Traveling Bong". The film scored more favorably with its target demographic of families.

Rough Night received a C-plus CinemaScore, and 47 Meters, a C.
