G-7 Reiterates, without US Support, Commitment to Paris Agreement

It is the first environment chiefs' meeting among the Group of Seven key industrial nations since U.S. President Donald Trump announced earlier this month his country's exit from the pact for setting an worldwide framework on the fight against global warming in and after 2020.

But the weekly magazine reported that Trudeau and some other leaders rejected German Chancellor Angela Merkel's aggressive approach to isolate Trump over his rambling and mistake-filled June 1 announcement that the us would withdraw from the Paris deal.

Thus far, the article has not been changed.

In addition, 274 US mayors representing 58 million Americans have signed onto a statement prepared by the Mayors National Climate Action Agenda (MNCAA) network to uphold the Paris Agreement, as of the evening of June 7, 2017.

Ministers from the Group of Seven (G7) countries on Monday agreed to language on an array of environmental topics, while said that the USA stood apart from the other six countries on confronting climate change.

In a phone call, Trudeau asked Merkel whether there would be anything wrong with removing references to the Paris Agreement from a G20 statement on climate change, the report said.

"We the United States do not join those sections of the communiqué on climate and [multilateral development banks], reflecting our recent announcement to withdraw and immediately cease implementation of the Paris agreement and associated financial commitments", it said.

"We the United States of America continue to demonstrate through action, having reduced our Carbon dioxide footprint as demonstrated by achieving pre-1994 Carbon dioxide levels domestically", the footnote read.

Catherine McKenna met with Scott Pruitt, the Administrator of the EPA, and the environment ministers of the other developed nations in the G7 in Bologna, Italy, over the weekend where, according to Ms. McKenna, the planned American withdrawal from the 2015 worldwide agreement to combat global warming was widely scorned.

"Today's action of reaching consensus makes clear that the Paris Agreement is not the only mechanism by which environmental stewardship can be demonstrated", he said.

As a result, the U.S. said it would not join those sections of the report on climate and multilateral development banks.

She also said she told Pruitt that the accord is "not open for renegotiation, although we are in the phase of negotiating the rules".

"The majority of the people in the United States are deeply committed to the Paris Agreement", Kerry said.

"We will meet the Paris standards, I believe, in the United States", he told a news conference.

The Paris Accord is an worldwide pact to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases to keep global temperatures from rising more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

The participants now have to negotiate the rules for implementing Paris, including how each country will report their efforts and progress, what kind of monitoring there will be and what can be done to promote compliance. Last week, Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland argued in a seminal speech to the House of Commons that Canada can no longer rely on the USA for global leadership.

Neither Syria nor Nicaragua signed the deal in 2015.

"The only legal framework for climate negotiations is the accord and objectives fixed in Paris and there is no doubt that they are irreversible", said Hulot, a former TV star and a longstanding environmental campaigner who was persuaded to enter government by new French President Emmanuel Macron.
