Made available for expansion draft

The NHL is set to have their first expansion draft in 17 years Wednesday night as the Las Vegas Golden Knights get ready for their first season by selecting 30 players.

The 2017 NHL Expansion Draft will take place Wednesday as the Las Vegas Golden Knights begin to fill out their roster.

Fleury was left unprotected by Pittsburgh after he agreed to waive the no-movement clause in his contract. This allows the Coyotes to protect another defenseman since their youngsters can not be selected.

Vatanen, a fifth-year player, won't be ready for the start of next season after having surgery to fix a shoulder injury.

Some players left unprotected, such as Ottawa forward Bobby Ryan, carry hefty contracts, which Vegas might shy away from so not to restrict the team's payroll structure under the salary cap. As for defensemen, Buffalo's Zach Bogosian and Dallas' Dan Hamhuis are available. Aside from Fleury, other goalies exposed are Florida's Roberto Luongo, Detroit's Peter Mrazek and Philadelphia's Michal Neuvirth.

The Capitals are likely going to lose either Philipp Grubauer or Nate Schmidt to the Golden Knights.

Last June, Las Vegas was awarded a franchise after majority team owner Bill Foley ponied up a record $500-million U.S. expansion fee.

"We have a pretty good idea of what we would do if we had to put the list in right now", he said. It should allow the Knights to stockpile an ample number of future draft picks. And Francis, who has said the Canes are "open for business", could make more deals with other National Hockey League teams before or during the draft in Chicago to fill the Canes' most glaring need: a top-six scoring forward. On their protection list, which was submitted to the league Saturday, Washington included forwards Alex Ovechkin, Nick Backstrom, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Andre Burakovsky, Marcus Johansson, Lars Eller, Tom Wilson as well as defensemen John Carlson, Matt Niskanen and Dmitry Orlov and goaltender Braden Holtby.

While the Blues must be prepared to lose one of their assets, it's possible that they could have some say in the proceedings, even beyond the protected list.

A very brief recap: The NHL Entry Draft is held for players between 18-20 (18-21 for European players) and doesn't end a players' NCAA eligibility. Goalie Jeff Glass is under contract for next season and fulfills the requirement for exposed goaltenders.

All players who have now effective and continuing "no movement" clauses at the time of the Expansion Draft must be protected.

In about 30 minutes, the National Hockey League is set to approve and release protected lists for all 30 already-established National Hockey League teams.

Then comes the start of free agency, which opens on July 1.

The Kings have many fine players worth placing on their protected list, including defenseman Drew Doughty, center Anze Kopitar and goaltender Jonathan Quick.

Chayka was exaggerating, but only slightly. San Jose chose the format of protecting seven forwards, three defensemen and one goalie rather than eight skaters and one goalie.

From Saturday afternoon through Thursday morning, after Vegas makes its picks, the rest of the teams can't make trades with each other.

That doesn't mean the other GMs can't talk. To be perfectly honest, if Penn State had a straight-to-NHL player on its roster right now this wouldn't be the first time we'd be talking about it.

McPhee has often indicated he wants a team that can skate fast, move the puck quickly in transitioning from defense to offense, win battles along the boards and in front of the net, play with a bit of an edge and outwork the opposition.
