US shoots down Syrian Air Force fighter

Sunday's incident came after Syrian aircraft attacked Syrian Democratic Forces earlier in the day, wounding several of the fighters, who are allies of the USA -led coalition to destroy ISIS, Combined Joint Task Force -Operation Inherent Resolve announced in a news release.

The US military said it acted in "collective self defence" of its partner forces and the US does not seek a fight with the Syrian government or its Russian supporters.

The statement described the Syrian military advance as a combat mission against ISIS militants, according to Reuters, and it said the confrontation with coalition forces was a "flagrant" attack created to undermine the army.

A U.S. Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet shot down a Syrian Su-22 on Sunday after the Soviet-era fighter-bomber dropped munitions near U.S. -backed Syrian Democratic Forces fighters, U.S. Central Command officials confirmed.

Coalition aircraft in a show of force stopped the initial advance. The pilot is missing, The Syrian Armed Forces said.

Following the strike, the coalition alerted Russian counterparts to de-escalate the situation. USA -backed forces have encircled the city of Raqqa and captured several districts from the militants.

The Combined Joint Task Force stressed that the coalition's mission is to defeat IS.

The move appears to mark a new escalation of the conflict.

The shootdown is the latest escalation between the USA -led coalition and pro-regime Assad forces in Syria.

Following the downing of the Syrian plane, clashes between government troops and coalition-backed fighters broke out in two villages some 40km south of the city of Raqqa, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Branding the action as flagrant aggression, the Syrian army said the downing of the Syrian war jet by the US coalition is an evidence on the supportive role of the the terror groups.
