5 facts about Juneteenth, marking the last day of slavery

SIOUX CITY | Juneteenth, a holiday marking the end of slavery in the southern United States, was celebrated Saturday in Sioux City.

Juneteenth is an official federal and state holiday referring to June 19, 1865, when the Union Army came to Galveston, Texas, with a proclamation that slaves were liberated, nearly two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

The festival that followed included live music, fun activities for kids such as a giant slide, delicious local soul food and a number of community resource booths, is held annually.

We owe so much to General Granger and the news he brought to Galveston on the day we now call Juneteenth.

This year's Juneteenth theme is "A Time to Heal, A Time to Unite".

The Guam Black Network hosted its Juneteenth Texan BBQ Celebration commemorating the emancipation of slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865, at Gov. Joseph Flores Beach Park on June 17, 2017.

In the 20th Century recognition of Juneteenth declined, only to find a resurgence during the Civil Rights Movement.

Bruce Madison said, "Celebrate what we have and how far we have come and see how far we got to go".

As Juneteenth is approaching, all kinds of celebrations are taking place all over the great Houston area on Sunday.

On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, an executive order which declared that all slaves in the Confederate States were free.

"Juneteenth celebrates African American freedom and emphasizes achievement and education", Dixon said. He believed their role is often forgotten or left out of the historical narrative.

The African American Museum of Iowa has been Juneteenth all weekend.

It is also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. Decades of collective action would follow as equality and justice for African-Americans advanced slowly, frustratingly, gradually, on our nation's journey toward a more ideal union.

"That kind of shocked me", Holloway said. "It's our diversity that makes us strong".
