Carnage at US Open as world's top three sent packing

Carnage at US Open as world's top three sent packing

Triple-bogeys have a way of sinking a round, but somehow that wasn't the situation for Paul Casey on Friday at the U.S. Open.

Undaunted, Fowler responded with a mammoth 51-foot putt for birdie on the eighth to reclaim a share of the lead.

But only for a couple minutes.

Harman might be the surprise leader after three rounds, but there was nothing ordinary about his game. And I pulled the four-iron on the par-three (sixth).

McIlroy missed the cut for a second consecutive U.S. Open.

Johnny Miller owned the previous best round of eight-under 63 set at the 1973 US Open at Oakmont. With about two hours left in the second round, the cut was looking to be 1-over par, which would tie a US Open record.

This isn't like most Opens.

"I've pictured winning the U.S. Open a lot of times before", he said.

Now he's on in the hunt at the 117th U.S. Open. Or at your home course.

It didn't work all that well.

Then, inexplicably, he lost his putting touch.

A record 44 players finished under par in the first round, bunching the field up as the action unfolds.

Patrick Reed has joined the 65 club at Erin Hills.

A do-over chip and two putts later, Hadwin's scorecard had its first double bogey of the championship. He missed a short birdie putt on 18.

Up to that point, Fleetwood pretty much couldn't find trouble if he tried. Mickelson has won every major but the U.S. Open. Reavie birdied five of his first seven holes, and eight in all Friday, to surge back into contention.

And Japan's Hideki Matsuyama (T-8) is ranked fourth in the world.

Casey, Koepka, Harman and Fleetwood have yet to tee off.

Wisconsin's golfing hero, Steve Stricker, recorded a round of 3-under to give hope to cheeseheads in pink golfing trousers. And he's giving the fans something to cheer. He shot a 2-over 74 on Thursday.

After tying for 45th at the Memorial last month, Matsuyama arrived at Erin Hills on a downturn in a topsy-turvy season. Add it up, and he's in a four-way tie for the lead at seven under.

Casey remained at the top of the leaderboard despite temporarily falling off Friday morning when he struggled through a stretch that included two bogeys and a triple bogey. It took a hard turn to the right and rolled in.

Golfers, by both nature and training, see the cup half-full even when the ball fails to drop.

Thomas is 2 under on the day and for 4 under for the tournament. He shot 68 and was only three back.

In the final round at Oakmont a year ago, his golf ball moved slightly as he positioned himself for a short putt on the fifth hole. Champ tees off later Saturday. He looked like he was making a move toward the tourney's leaderboard. His round would have been better had it not been for two bogeys in his closing holes.

Low scores were available.

The little lefty from Georgia has a chance to make a little history at Erin Hills.

The talented Englishman shot a second round of 71 to leave him on seven under for the competition.

Johnson put his weekend in jeopardy after missing a 6-footer for par on the par-3 13th.

Reigning Masters champion Sergio Garcia headlines a group still in the hunt at three under.

Not bad for a guy who made the cut on the number. He is 1 over for his round with six holes. They are always only a tick here or there away from a birdie run.

The U.S. Open is wide open going into the weekend.

In fact, that's 15 more than the top 18 players on the leaderboard going into the weekend.

But that's not all that makes the possibilities so limitless Saturday. The 2011 U.S. Open champion joked that this championship has become his "annual missed cut".

The Northern Irishman closed out his round in style with four birdies over his final six holes for a 71 but it was a case of too little unable to undo the damage of a first round 78. Billy Horschel was tied for the 36-hole lead at Merion.
