Merkel urges speedy Brexit talks after United Kingdom vote

Even the idea that a vote for the Labour Party could be seen as some sort of "protest" is not necessarily borne out by the evidence.

European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker said he hoped there would not be "further delay" in the Brexit talks that "we are desperately waiting for".

"What I think is important in the Brexit negotiations, which will start in 10 days time, is that we have the certainty of a Government that can take forward a plan into those negotiations". Instead, they lost seats and the majority, and will be forced to form a coalition government with a smaller party. He said British people have had enough of austerity politics and cuts in public spending, ruling out the potential for deals or pacts with other progressive parties in Parliament.

After the election, the right-wing UK Independence Party, which helped drive Brexit, was left with no seats in Parliament.

"She [Ms. May] wanted a mandate; the mandate she's got is lost votes, lost support and lost confidence", said Mr. Corbyn as he secured a greater majority in his constituency of Islington North. The Liberal Democrats gained three seats, bringing their total to 12. Tim Farron, the current leader, retained his seat with only a narrow majority.

Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny tweeted Sunday that he had spoken with May "and indicated my concern that nothing should happen to put (the Good Friday Agreement) at risk".

May's bet that she could strengthen her hand by crushing what she believed to be a weak opposition Labour Party backfired spectacularly on Thursday as voters stripped her Conservative Party of a parliamentary majority. If it is, Theresa May did not mention it after returning from her meeting with HM The Queen. "Now let's get to work", she said.

While the party backed Britain's exit from the European Union, it has pushed back in the past against a "hard Brexit". "Whoever it is, they are going to have to make deals with other political parties, and nearly every other political party that has an MP in the new parliament wants a softer version of Brexit", says French.

Uncertainty sparked by the exit poll sent the value of the British pound tumbling 1.6%, to $1.27.

"Theresa May fighting to stay in Downing St as senior Tories ponder leadership challenge", the staunchly Conservative Daily Telegraph headlined, using the party's nickname.

May was criticized for making a number of U-turns on social welfare and she came under fire for a controversial proposal on who should pay for the cost of care for the elderly, a policy that became known as the "dementia tax". The Prime Minister called this election on the basis she would need a stronger mandate to negotiate Brexit.

As she battled to form her cabinet amid depleted resources, May made clear there would be no major changes.

The attacks triggered a heated debate on whether the police are well-enough resourced to deal with terror threats.
