Niantic unveils HUGE new Gym update, Raids and Legendary release

Prior to the update, Pokemon Gyms were fairly bare bones.

A controlling team can now also select six Pokemon to guard the game, with challenging players facing them in the order placed. Pokemon will be fought in the order they're added to the gym rather than CP order. "We will provide updates on our social channels in advance of Gyms closing in-game".

Pokemon assigned to Gyms will now have a motivation meter. In addition to this, Pokemon will temporarily lose their CP which makes them easier for the other team to defeat. Defeating the boss means a chance to catch a powerful Pokemon, and exclusive items like rare sweets, golden razz berries and a fast attack or charged attack technical machine. This will place a powerful defender in a Gyms as an in-game event, giving people the chance to team up and take down the Raid Boss.

"At the heart of the update is a new motivation system that will significantly change how you interact with Gyms". They might not function like badges in the main franchise, but they are still a welcome sight.

You will also earn bronze, silver, or gold badges at gyms you fight at and the prestige system is to be scrapped. Niantic has been fiddling with gyms ever since, and seems finally to have decided the best thing to do is just change it completely. As the name suggests, raid boss Pokemon are extremely powerful and will curb stomp even the most powerful of solo trainers. These raid passes are your key to battle when you see a large egg on top of a gym.

Raids will be coming to Pokemon Go. A Rare Candy will turn into any Pokemon's candy when used on them, a Golden Razz Berry will increase the chances of a successful catch far beyond normal, and Technical Machines can teach your Pokemon a new move, and come in fast and charged varieties. To ensure that Pokemon don't lose their motivation players will need to feed berries to their team's Pokemon. With the game steadily approaching its first anniversary, the chances of Niantic debuting a number of new features in its most successful title definitely makes flawless sense. Not only will the reworked mechanics encourage trainers to visit more gyms, but raid bosses will give players an incentive to cooperate, especially if those bosses include the legendaries trainers have been waiting for since Pokemon GO was first announced.
