Rosenstein Says He Wouldn't Fire Special Counsel Without Good Cause

Rosenstein Says He Wouldn't Fire Special Counsel Without Good Cause

He said it was "pretty clear" by recent comments by one of Trump's lawyers that firing Mueller had at least been discussed.

House Speaker Paul Ryan said on Tuesday he would be "surprised" if President Trump fired Robert Mueller and encouraged him to allow the special counsel to "do his job independently".

"If there were good cause, I would consider it", Rosenstein testified.

During testimony to a budget panel Rosenstein said he has seen no cause for Mueller's dismissal and that he will be given "full independence" from the Department of Justice to conduct his investigation.

Gingrich, who only a few weeks ago called Mueller a "superb choice" with an "impeccable" reputation, tweeted on Monday: "Republicans are delusional if they think the special counsel is going to be fair".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions who recused himself from participating in the Russian Federation probe, and as a result, Rosenstein is now the highest-ranking official at the Justice Department overseeing Mueller's Russian Federation probe. Rosenstein wrote a memo to Sessions on Comey, which was then used by the administration to justify firing the director for his handling of the Clinton case. It was called the "Saturday night massacre" when on October 20, 1973 President Richard Nixon fired Attorney General Elliot L. Richardson and Deputy Attorney General William D. Ruckelshaus after they refused to fire Archibald Cox, who had been appointed special prosecutor in the Watergate cover-up scandal.

"Well, I respect the move, but the entire thing has been a witch hunt".

Mr Sessions vigorously denied having an undisclosed meeting with Russia's ambassador to the US.

"And the reason for that is, that if it is within the scope of Director Mueller's investigation - and I've been a prosecutor for 27 years - we don't want people talking publicly about the subjects of ongoing investigation", he continued. Unsatisfied, Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, said that he'd like the scope in writing. He is at the Senate committee and goes to the House one at 2 p.m. ET.

The responsibility for appointing (or theoretically firing) Mueller lies with Rosenstein because his boss, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, recused himself in March from all investigations involving Russian Federation and the 2016 elections.

Ruddy lashed out at Spicer and the White House communications team in a Tuesday interview on MSNBC, calling their behavior "amateur hour" and accusing them of failing the president.

Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mueller, declined to comment on Ruddy's remarks.

Ryan noted if Trump chose to fire Mueller, it would be a "big problem for him politically".

Mr. Trump, Ruddy said, "was looking at [Mueller] potentially to become the next Federal Bureau of Investigation director. And there is no collusion between certainly myself and my campaign, but I can always speak for myself - and the Russians, zero", Trump responded.

Speculation is swirling about whether President Donald Trump will remove special counsel Robert Mueller from his post. Richardson refused and resigned, as did Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus.
