Scalise doctor hopes for 'excellent recovery' despite risk

Scalise doctor hopes for 'excellent recovery' despite risk

The business of the House was resuming a day after a rifle-wielding attacker opened fire on Republican lawmakers practicing for a charity baseball game, critically wounding House GOP Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana and hitting aides and Capitol police.

Scalise remains in critical condition, but has improved, MedStar Washington Hospital said in an update Thursday night.

He is the House majority whip, the third-ranking member of the leadership team of the Republican Party majority that controls that chamber of the U.S. Congress.

Nonetheless, said Sava, "We fully expect him to be able to walk" and "hopefully run".

Dr. Jack Sava, trauma director at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, says several operations have controlled the bleeding and Scalise's vital signs have stabilized.

Speaker Paul Ryan of Wis., left, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of N.Y., House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of Calif., and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Ky., applaud a message by President Donald Trump on the.

"Most importantly, we are forever grateful for the heroism of Special Agents Crystal Griner and David Bailey, who saved the lives of everyone at the baseball field that morning, including Steve's", Scalise's wife, Jennifer, said in the statement. Scalise was on the second base when he was injured by a crazed gunman who was trying to kill Republicans Wednesday. They released photos of guns similar to the handgun and rifle that were used in the attack, which officials have said were purchased legally. Lawmakers called for a new dialogue on lowering the partisan temperature, and Trump urged Americans to come together as he assumed the role of national unifier for one of the first times in his presidency.

Republicans and Democrats put aside their differences to root for "Team Scalise" during the Congressional Baseball Game this year. "Yes, he has additional operations he will need before he leaves the hospital".

According to Sava, the bullet fractured upon entering Scalise's hip. "When he arrived he was in critical condition with an imminent risk of death".

Hodgkinson was a volunteer for the Bernie Sanders presidential campaign a year ago and has comments on his social media accounts strongly criticizing President Trump.

The FBI said it was investigating the shooter's "activities and social media impressions" in the months leading up to the attack. She said Hodgkinson was home all day, and she suspected he left because "he just wanted a break from it". He declined to describe specific internal injuries. With the chief deputy of the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department by her side, she said she felt "horrible" about the actions of her husband of almost 30 years.
