New York Times sues Federal Bureau of Investigation to get notes of Comey-Trump talks

New York Times sues Federal Bureau of Investigation to get notes of Comey-Trump talks

President Donald Trump's transition team has been ordered to preserve materials related to ongoing investigations into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 USA election, the New York Times reported on Friday, as Trump again assailed the probes.

The memos to Trump transition and campaign officials came in the wake of former FBI Director Robert Mueller's appointment as special counsel to oversee the investigation into Russian election meddling and ties between Trump campaign associates and Russian officials.

In a series of statements on Twitter on Thursday, Mr Trump repeated his claim that Mr Mueller's investigation is a "WITCH HUNT" based on the "phony" premise of possible collusion between Russian Federation and a cadre of Trump campaign associates. In a sign of the investigation's new focus, Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team is interviewing a number of intelligence officials who we know had conversations with Trump about the Russian Federation investigation.

Trump's Friday tweet was the first official confirmation that he is being investigated by the special counsel over the reasons he fired Comey last month. A day later, Mr Rosenstein appointed Mr Mueller, who was at the helm of the Federal Bureau of Investigation during the September 11 attacks, as special counsel.

Another is, indeed, the possibility that Trump may have obstructed justice in his repeated efforts to quash the investigation.

"This is a political fight and he's going to fight it", a White House official said regarding president's Friday's tweets.

Last month, Rosenstein wrote a memo to the president raising concerns over Comey's performance.

Comey told a Senate panel last week he believed Trump had directed him to drop an agency investigation into Flynn. According to the Post, Mueller plans to interview both officials soon, and also plans to question Richard Ledgett, who until recently held the No. 2 job at the NSA.

After Trump's tweet Friday morning, a person close to the president's legal team told NPR's Scott Horsley that the tweet referred to the Wednesday Washington Post report regarding possible obstruction of justice.

Trump demonstrated Friday morning that the Russian Federation probe continues to consume his attention, tweeting a stream of messages decrying the controversy. Americans should be skeptical about anonymous allegations. The order also covers separate inquiries into several key Trump associates including former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, campaign adviser Paul Manafort, foreign policy aide Carter Page and outside adviser Roger Stone.

In an attempt to inoculate the Trump administration from criticism over Comey, many top officials have heralded Rosenstein.

Raw Story's Sarah K. Burris said, "The statement left the internet wondering if it was forced by President Donald Trump - or if the Justice Department was hacked".

His time under Bush, Obama and then Trump made him the longest-serving US attorney in the nation's history when he was confirmed to his current role under Sessions.
