SC Congressman's Name was on DC Shooter's List, FBI Reveals

SC Congressman's Name was on DC Shooter's List, FBI Reveals

So far in the investigation surrounding the shooting authorities have found that Hodgkinson acted alone and has no ties to any terrorist group. Hodgkinson also had email communications with the two U.S. senators for Illinois - Tammy Duckworth and Dick Durbin.

The FBI said Hodgkinson frequently criticized Republicans on social media, but the posts "appear to be First Amendment-protected speech".

"While the shooter was not known to have a history of diagnosed mental illness, he was known to have an anger management problem", Slater says.

Scalise's condition has been upgraded to "fair" from "serious", according to the hospital on Wednesday.

He also had several run-ins with local law enforcement in IL and disagreements with neighbours, including shooting off rounds into pine trees.

The FBI said Hodgkinson arrived in Alexandria sometime in March and participated in a demonstration over tax reform on Tax Day.

Five people were shot at a morning practice about five miles from the Capitol, the police said. Hodgkinson, armed with an assault-style rifle and handgun, was fatally wounded in an exchange of gunfire with the two officers and other local police in what Alexandria Police Chief Mike Brown described as "a combat situation".

He said authorities found a laptop computer, a cell phone and a digital camera in Hodgkinson's auto but an analysis of the items showed that he did not place any online posts of threats or references to lawmakers or the baseball game.

The FBI found a Google search of truck stops, maps and toll-free routes to the Northern Virginia area on his computers. "I can't speak to exactly what he was thinking at the moment or his motive, but I think as we continue to look at his communications and look at his online footprint, I think we'll have a better indication of maybe what his thoughts were closer to why he did (opened fire)", Slater said.

A review of the gunman's internet searches showed the man only did a cursory search of two people on the list, said Slater, who did not denote which two lawmakers. "The morning of the shooting, a witness reported Hodgkinson asking them, 'Is this the Republican or Democrat baseball team?' When the witness responded that it was a Republican event, Hodgkinson reportedly remained at the baseball field".

The bureau confirmed Hodgkinson was carrying a piece of paper with the names of six members of Congress - including Jeff Duncan, Mo Brooks, Trent Franks and Scott DesJarlais - at the time of the shooting, but "no context was included on this paper".

The FBI also said that Hodgkinson visited a storage facility in Alexandria more than 43 times between April and June. Another U.S. Capitol Police officer was struck by shrapnel, and Rep. Roger Williams (R-Tex.) injured his ankle while helping others take cover.

The sheriff said deputies arrived to find Hodgkinson with a hunting rifle on his property where he was apparently engaged in target practice.
